I heard recently that Santa Claus was originally dressed in green not red and that it was a promotional campaign by Coca Cola that dressed him in red back in the late 19th early 20th century

Yeah, I think you’re on the right track there Sparky,
I think Santa Claus derives from a pagan god or something similar,
I’ll have to look it up

Am I right in thinking there was a pagan traditional celibration around the time of Christmas which was taken over by the christian calender?

Why celebrate Easter – the crucification of Christ? That’s the way it is.

In a way I do agree. However it sounds to me as cynical when people celebrate Christmas or Easter and never go to church nor believe.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-11-02 AT 09:45 AM (GMT)]I’m sorry to put the dampers on this thread, but firstly why do Europeans go on about thanksgiving , the same as they do about Independence day, it’s an American thing so what’s it got to do with us?

And why do the white Americans give thanks to the native American? for giving up their land for them? and their culture before being slaughtered?

I’m sorry if this sounds cynical, but the idea of Thanksgiving seems very hypocritical to me!

Wish I was still there to see it going on – but have a good one anyway and let’s hope no evil halfwit does something stupid to ruin it for you.

>What is thanksgiving? I’ve heard about it but I’m not sure
>what it actually is.

When the pilgrims landed in North America the Native Americans felicitated the europeans with a banquet. In rememberance of that kind gesture Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in the U.S. with Turkey and Pumpkin pie, amongst other food. It is celebrated as a holiday to give “Thanks” to the Native Americans, even though nowadays some Americans have no idea what Thanksgiving day is about.

Sam.
