Hardwick

Sunday was open day to the 489th bomb group museum and Maurice Hammonds hardwick warbirds both on the old airfield near Topcroft village. As is the norm with any flying event and public holiday in England someone forgot to feed the weather meter and a strong wind put the blockers on the mustangs flying and some of the charity sellers turning up.

having spoken to “Mr Hammond”(or badgering him for info) he explained with patience about the pitfalls of the torque on the P51 causing problems enough when flaring out on a good day landing but mixed with a strong crosswind and its a “no””no”.One thing I did find out for sure was he was doing the merlins for the Brothers who own the Lancaster at East kirby and they do hope to make it airworthy sometime. This is probably old hat to some people but it was news to me.One other good thing I did notice was a lot of effort was put in to turn the main hangar around and put some displays on which proved pretty interesting, were hands on with sound affects and gave out some interesting insights about life at the time during the big event of the last century.

The atmosphere while looking around is relaxed and it passes away the time on a bad weather day.One aircraft did fly and this was the Harvard/Texan and it was for a poppy drop although I didnt ask where.I tried an arty shot of some poppy’s with the Texan in the background blurred but dont know if I pulled it off.To the photos.:):) http://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y322/billyjack_2010/SDC10380.jpghttp://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y322/billyjack_2010/h7.jpghttp://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y322/billyjack_2010/h8.jpghttp://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y322/billyjack_2010/IMG_6276.jpghttp://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y322/billyjack_2010/IMG_6297_1.jpghttp://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y322/billyjack_2010/SDC10409.jpghttp://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y322/billyjack_2010/SDC10410.jpghttp://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y322/billyjack_2010/SDC10422.jpg :)

Hi yak 11 thanks for good comment and yes do see your point as it may cause some confusion.Once visited though people will see where the different attractions are located.

Looks very good, strictly speaking the main museum on site is dedicated to the 93rd Bomb Group who were based at Hardwick.

The sort of scene you are refering to with sewing machine and pinny does’nt look out of place as to how some folk still like in my part of norfolk. when the familys try to get rid of unwanted goods in a garage sale.

“I did try and bargain for the parrafin burner” but she remained tight lipped about it all even though I said I could get one for 99p on “E” bay.:):)
