Harrier Gate Guards

As mentioned in another thread I went to Cottesmore yesterday to spot some flying Harriers.

Just my luck to get there and find the airforce wasnt flying yesterday and the nearest I got to seeing any of those fantastic machines was the Gate Guards at Cottesmore and nearby Wittering.

Hard to belive the GR.3’s are classed as historic aircraft now after watching them in service as a kid.

Many thanks to the stations guards for allowing me to take some pictures.

See u at some point over weekend
Scott

GR3 is good looking but the FRS1 and FA2 give it a run for its money, all Harrier 1’s are better lookers then the plastic Harrier II’s.

tidy looking harriers Ref!

They look in great shape. Interesting about the tires never heard of sand filled before…

I would also say that on this example the tires were all in good condtion and not deflated in anyway. Although it may be that the RAF fills them with something other than air.

Gate guards used to have the tyres filled with sand. If they were filled with anything else it would probably be nitrogen, old habits die hard.

Ive got to say that they are both in rather good condition.

The Cottesmore example was difficult to get a proper look at as it was on the other side of the fence to me.

The Wittering example I can comment further on as i was cheeky and took about 50 detailed pics for my next modelling project. Its a little faded in areas but on the whole it looks cared for.

The port outrigger undercarriage door features a list of the names of the people who painted her last time round. The paint is in good sound condition and I could only see one minor area where the paint was lifting from the airframe. I would also say that on this example the tires were all in good condtion and not deflated in anyway. Although it may be that the RAF fills them with something other than air. Put it this way if I owned it Id be pleased with the condition on her. A very tidy airframe.

I hate to see gate guards looking unloved and faded…

Peter,

You ought to see what the RAF is like behind the fence…….faded isn’t the word.

Be thankful that there are still individuals who want them there…..there is generally no money to be spared to paint and polish the gate gaurds, or the manpower with any inclination to look after them. Food for thought?
