Hi All
I am trying to find out more about this aircraft and if any part of it still exists, and during my search I came across this excellent forum. If anyone can help I would be very thankful. I was serving with 10 Field Squadron Royal Engineers who supported the RAF Gutersloh Harrier Force, and I was on site when it went down. We had to cut a track through the forest to allow the RAF recovery teams to access the crash site. The Harrier was very badly damaged, particularly the front end and cockpit.
Having searched all previous posts, I came across mention of a chap called Ian Sheffield who I believe possibly has the cockpit from XW272. If Ian is still around, or if there is someone with a particular interest in this aircraft, I have some photographs I took at the crash site which might be of interest.
The above link will take you to the MOD website which gives a summary of the accident.
Brilliant forum, many thanks to all contrutors.
Kind regards.
Neil.

Neil,
I have also discovered this excellent site and have a vested interest in XW272. If you are able to send me some photos, I would be eternally grateful.

Great site and some lovely photos of the harriers, particularly the GR3 on the road

There are at least two photos of XW272 in flying conditions on our website www.sg-etuo.de about RAF Gütersloh.
– XW272/Z Harrier T2 20Sqn, Gütersloh (August 1974)
– XW272/Z Harrier T4 4Sqn Gütersloh (Februar 1980)
@WOBBLEARM
It would be great if we might use your photos from the crash site on our website.

XW272 Harrier T4
Hi Neil,
I too was on the site when our boss Dutch Holland crashed. I remember thinking at the time he was taking longer than usual to get off the ground. He only got about 30ft of the ground with the nose high up then ran out of strip then went into the trees with a dull thud and a big fireball. Very sad.If you have photo’s of the site i would be very interested.
Kind Regards
Mike

Neil,
Welcome to the madhouse, however Ian sold that cockpit a few years ago to another guy whose a member here (also a Neil)
Thus….

However the cockpit was an unflown ‘boiler-plate’ or ‘space-model’ from Dunsfold and not the real XW272. More details (and photo’s) in this thread….
