The announcement that the RAF’s Harrier fleet will be axed in 2011 was quite a shock to me, and I must say I didn’t see it coming. I suppose I haven’t been keeping a close enough eye on military matters as they pertain to the U.K.
With all of that having been said, I figured I’d ask some of you from the U.K. what your opinion is on the Harrier fleet being axed:
Did it surprise you?
Do you consider this “retirement” a bit premature or perhaps do you agree with the decision that the Harrier fleet should go.
Just seems shocking to me as the Harrier has more or less been one of the backbone aircraft of the U.K.’s Royal Air Force (& Navy) for over 40 years and I was under the impression that the current Harrier GR.9 fleet was in the process of getting quite a number of new capabilities.
