Hartlepool sponsored Spitfires

Hello fellow enthusiast,

I am trying to get my wife, who is from Hartlepool, a special Christmas present. I want to get her some nose art replica from one of the Hartlepool sponsored Spitfires. I have found someone whos does the artwork, now I am trying to find pictures or any other documentation to show what the Spitfires had on them.

I think one of them had “The Hartlepool Monkey” on it, and the other had Andy Capp on it. But that is unconfirmed, and I would like them to be authentic as possible. There is one called “The Darlington Spitfire” complete with a book written about it (although, I am having difficulty finding it in hardback), and Darlington is not that far from Hartlepool, so that is a possibility.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Wendell

Thank you for the information, I have sent an email to the Hartlepool Mail requesting information. Also, thanks for the update on the book, I was thinking my Google skills had failed me when I couldn’t find it in hardback. I might have to see about contacting the author as well to see if he can help me.

I hope everyone has an excellent day!

The book was only ever published in paperback and it’s author often frequents this forum and may be able to help more ?

The operational history of Industria was researched and written by the late Frank Yeoman and appeared in the Hartlepool Mail , possibly in the late 1950’s to early 1960’s ? He was a local school teacher but had been a national service pilot and flew Neptunes with 36 Squadron at RAF Topcliffe and also contributed to many of the Harleyford series of books .

One thing – the ‘Andy Capp’ Spitfire is probably a false lead as the cartoon didn’t appear in the Mirror until 1957
