Harvard film roles

At the risk of being completely wrong, I thought I would ask this question anyway…

Whilst watching A Bridge Too Far today, I spotted in the background of one of the ground scenes the well-known Thunderbolt-Harvards, as well as the Typhoon-Harvards in the ground-attack sequences.

Something tells me, however, that one or two Harvards were once modified to represent Fokker D.XIIs in a film – including the fitting of wheel-spats as well as the usual cockpit altering.

Did I imagine this?

As well as Tora! Tora! Tora!, the T-6 played the bad guy in God is my Co-Pilot and Flying Leathernecks.

I have a feeling that yet more T6 in party frocks featured in Bridge at Remagen, but I may well be confusing it with the bridge scene in Kelly’s Heroes.

Robert Mitchum in a film I think was called ” RETURN to FAIRBOROUGH” they used Gary Numans Harvard G-AZSC.

Reunion At Fairborough

That was on again yesterday. Nice flying sequences at the end, with the Harvard and the two Hunters.

What was the identity of the Hunters, and are they still around ?

Hunter One Team, or Hunter Team One.

When I first saw “Kelly’s Heroes” I thought that aircraft was a T-6. On viewing it many times I realised it was not a T-6 but a Yugoslavian made aircraft. I can’t remember the type’s name but it was profiled in “Warbirds Worldwide” some years back. Can anyone remember what the type was called. Was it the “Soko” ?

Colin

I just did some Googling and found the aircraft in question was a Soko 522. Check out www.airserbia.com and you can find a video clip of that scene from “Kellys Heroes”.

Don’t forget the T6 Thunderbolt that strafes the guys in Kellys Heroes (truly the best war film ever) – don’t remember seeing the T6 190’s and Thunderbolts in A Bridge Too Far, what scenes were those?

The Stampe Museums Harvard N4109C was recently also used for filming.

In that case Daz, concentrate on the fake tanks & half tracks getting blown to bits LoL Just a thought though, anyone know if the BBMF aircraft have been used in films? Be a great way for them to get extra funding so that the tight fisted idiots in the MOD wouldnt complain (too much anyways) Bex

I’ll take a look next time.

BBMF aircraft – umm… well, Battle of Britain springs to mind! 😉

The Lancastar was used in a French film called Lieutenant Karl, I think.

Great stuff! Many thanks 🙂

Must say, the Fokker-Harvards are very convincing at first glance!

I suppose the “ABTF” fighters just about do the job if you don’t look too carefully… 😉

Rob, not sure about 190 scences but the Thunberbolt scenes off the top of my head are when 30 Corps start heading down the road and waqlk straight into an ambush, pop purple smoke and bobs ya uncle the german anti tank gunners get a major league headache. Bex

No, that’s the “Typhoon” sequence – they start dropping bombs on the German troops in that scene.

The “Thunderbolts” are most visible early on in the movie when Ryan O’Neal (I think) is talking with one of his men – the aircraft are visible in the background, along with a few Daks.

I don’t recall ever seeing the ‘190-Harvards, though

I haven’t seen the movie, but if I recall correctly from WW’s feature on Patton, Blood & guts there are T-6s in it. After neither P-51D N6356T nor the Buchons with scoops were used the film company enlisted the service of the Spanish AF and some of their T-6s.

Where Eagles Dare was shot in Austria, but the “lufwaffe fighters” were former Swiss Air Force Harvard IIBs (sold to the film company on February 26, 1968) and were ex U-311, -315, -317 and -327

Thanks Benno…..they say you learn something new every day.

Weird though as a few of them have roll back canopies. Will have to find enough courage to watch it again for another look!!

Best wishes,

Martin
