Harvards on film

Possibly one of the most versatile film aircraft, the Harvard has appeared in one form or another in a number of major movies since it first flew!

I’ve just finished watching Soldier of Orange and am currently watching Paul Verhoeven’s other WW2 thriller, Black Book – both feature Harvards in a couple of scenes:

Soldier of Orange
German “bombers” attacking a Dutch town (I imagine these are the modified Harvards that appeared as FW-190s in A Bridge Too Far?)
RAF fighters (Typhoons?) at the end of the film (again, as above)

Black Book
Luftwaffe-painted Harvard attacking B-17G Sally-B near the beginning.

Of course, there are lots of them in Tora! Tora! Tora!

Any others?

Harvards disguised as Zero fighters appeared in the film The Final Countdown, and on TV the same types appeared in Black Sheep Squadron and at least one episode of Fantasy Island, plus also Tales of the Gold Monkey.

I’m sure a Harvard appeared playing a Zero in the film The Flying Leathernecks, along with Hellcats playing Zeroes. And wasn’t it Harvards in the Pearl Harbor attack scenes of From Here To Eternity?

Harvards also appeared in The Tuskegee Airmen

I dunno about The Flying Leathernecks, but you’re spot on about the Hellcats playing Zeros.

I’m sure a Harvard appeard in an episode of Star Trek once, too.
And yes, it had Japanese meatballs on it!

A film I’ve only ever seen once or twice, a loooong time ago, God is my Co-Pilot, had “Hollywood Zeros” in it – painted-up Harvards dogfighting with a P-40.

And in the mini-series ‘A Thousand Skies’ a Harvard represents the Lockheed “Lady Southern Cross” in which Charles Kingsford Smith was killed.

In the movie “The Great Air Race” Jacqueline Cockran’s Gee Bee QED is portrayed by a Harvard II for Helen Slater to fiddle around with.

An ex-RNZAF Harvard played an RNZAF Harvard in the NZ film ‘Absent Without Leave’. It was in a scene where the plane crashed and the lead character saved the pilot. The film was based on a true story.

And these Soko trainers were also used in the Yugoslavian movie “Sutjeska” starring Richard Burton.

Presumably playing FW-190s of some description..?

Actually, joking aside, that film looked pretty bloody good!

They appear strafing Cary Grant’s submarine in “Operation Petticoat”, although the initial dive to attack (filmed from distance) appears to be three Bearcats……

Well I’ll be jiggered, thanks for the correction.

I just checked Wikipedia and it confirmed the aircraft used in “Kelly’s Heroes” was indeed the Soko 522 and not the Harvard.

Not Harvards in “Kelly’s Heroes”

Pretty sure it’s a Harvard that strafes Clint and the boys in Kelly’s Heroes.

…..It’s a mother beautiful bridge … and it’s gonna be there !!! :D:D

Without a shadow of a doubt, though Kelly’s Heroes and Catch 22 run pretty close!

Edit, also I seem to remember that it is Harvards that do the bombing of the U-boat pens at the films’ dramatic end.[/QUOTE]

Correct, watched it again a couple of weeks ago….one of the best War films / dramas ever made……in my humble opinion.

It is, and also strafing U-96 in Das Boot. Given how realistic this film is their appearance is a bit disapointing. Does anyone know what they were supposed to be, and was a single engined aircraft of the time capable of attacking a sub well out at sea?

Edit, also I seem to remember that it is Harvards that do the bombing of the U-boat pens at the films’ dramatic end.

Didn’t they use ex- Spanish T-6s in Patton starring George C. Scott? Seem to remember that there was were some Harvards in Eagles Over London as well.

Harvards in war movies

The Harvard is a real star in war movies ! Yes the Harvards appear as Typhoons in ‘Bridge Too far’, dropping bombs ! Lots of very modified ones in ‘Tora, Tora, Tora.’

Dont forget some more acting as Zeros in ‘Empire of the Sun’.
There are some German painted ones in both the ‘The Great Escape’ and ‘Where Eagles Dare’.

So indeed very versatile as a movie star !
