Has The Queen ever been to Duxford ?

Always see the Queen going to hundreds of events each year & wondered if she had ever been to an air show at Duxford ? I am sure since she grew up during the war she has seen and heard Spits &Hurricanes ,Mossies, Lancs. humming along across the skies in the UK . Just wondering…. she always wears lovely hats !

I wonder if the (late, and much lamented) Queen Mother was aware that she was wearing the cabin soundproofing?

The late Senator John Tower was a visitor in the mid 90s I think.

The late legendary Walter Cronkite, well known wartime broadcaster was a visitor some 3-4 years ago.

I was lucky to be introduced to the Queen mum on her visit in 1985.

A friend reminded me that she & Prince Phillip greeted Col Robert Morgan & several US Eight Vets at Duxford back in 97 I believe ..Morgan the pilot of the one and only Memphis Belle..he was wearing his Pinks & Greens that day. I see she is coming to NYC to address the UN !..Very Nice I look forward to seeing her matching handbag & hat !

The way I heard it, some jobsworth wouldn’t let her in with the corgis so she went off in a huff 🙂

Heavens! I would have thought the Airfield Manager would have opened it before she got there, so that she did not have to hold the door open for everyone.

She’s good like that.

I’m hoping to go to Duxford not this weekend coming but the one after, possibly a week Friday. What can I expect?

You’ll see an awful lot of aircraft and a quality selection of tanks, plus a bunch of other ephemera – all beautifully displayed.

There is always the possibility of something flying, though no one can make promises for that. Classic Wings may be open and giving joy rides in their Dragon Rapide and/or Tiger Moth.

You will need, at least, two full days to see everything.

I would imagine that, ‘when one has one’s own Air Force’, one cannot be a**sed to go to airshows!

Her dad was touring some Army base & they’d got a land rover kitted out fit for a King etc to drive him around in.
Officer says to His Maj “If you’l just come this way to your Landrover we may continue with the tour” (or words to that effect)
King looks across at row of neatly parked LR’s & replies “They’re all mine..”

The Queen Mother went at least once, in the summer of 1985 I think. The occasion was an anniversary review of the RAF.

Got some pictures somewhere; BBMF, the Vintage Pair, Queen’s Flight Wessex, Tornado F1 and GR3, Harrier GR3. The usual suspects for the period.

Regards

The Queen opened the AAM in 97.

I’d think Sir Elton has better things to do…but I could be wrong since his father was in the RAF.

(I really do apologize for such an obvious joke…)

Nah – he’d be more likely to visit Cape Canavaral

I think Fergie was going to go until she counted up what was in the briefcase and decided it wasn’t enough!
