Has the tide just turned for the RN ?

I came across this little story today in the Portsmouth paper

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/Liverpool-will-stay-in-navy.4833109.jp

Basically its saying that HMS Liverpool (type 42) is to have her service life extended beyond what was previously announced with a small refit. This seems slightly contrary to recent policy with the other ships in her class which seem to have been sent to the scrapyard with some regularity up until recently eg Cardiff, Glasgow, Newcastle. Also I think Nottingham was moved to extended readiness this year.

Has someone just put a marker in the ground and said ‘we can cut no further’ as service life extensions are not that common for Destroyers in the RN these days, particularly with the type 45’s about to enter service.

Thoughts anyone ?

Exeter and southampton were due off the books in the next few months anyway, Nottingham still has well over a year ’till she’s due to be decommisioned, and still notionally has a crew and as such is a prime candidate for putting back to sea.

I have since noticed that someone on the NavWeaps website noticed this story a few hours before me and the speculation there is that those ships in extended readiness will be providing the spare parts for Liverpool to keep her and her cohort in service.

has the tide turned???? Me thinks not!

Not whilst this Gov is in and the silly old Admirals site in their nice warm ivory towers in Portsmouth/London. They too are to blame and Nelson must be spinning like nothing on earth with the state of his once proud and powerful fleet. Poorly lead and badly supplied that is the way of the RN today.

Anyone else feel strongly enough about the state of military investment to write to their MP?

not really possible in the current financial climate, perhaps after C1 finishes production in 15 years or so(a guess at that figure) when the economy is likely to be far better than it is today perhaps there will be room for T45B3 using the same extended hull from the C.1’s

while we are talking about T42’s it would have been nice to see a couple preserved as museums!!!

If any of the current crop of ships are to be preserved as museums I would expect it to be Invincible.

They should re-activate HMS nottingham too, 12 destroyers again keep them in service until after all the type 45s have been handed over then make an arguement for their replacement with Type 45 batch 2.

They are probably using the money for Exeter Nottingham and Southampton to keep Liverpool in service, I assume that of the four it was in the best condition. However with a Batch 2 being kept until 2012, that could mean the Batch 3’s remaining in service for quite a while longer (wasn’t the last batch 4 supposed to go in 2012 or 2013?).

Even with Liverpool having her life extended, it still leaves only 5 T42’s in active service as Exeter, Southampton & Nottingham are in Extended Readiness.

This govt has halved the Destroyer force since it took office in 1997. The twelve T42’s have been whittled down, & as we all now, are now going to be replaced by only 6 T45’s.

This is nothing less than scandalous & downright dangerous.

I would like to think that HMG has finally realised that enough is enough. Time will tell.

even so it’s hardly a replacement for the 2 T45’s that were dropped from production
