Has there ever been a 2-seat Spitfire formation display?

If anyone knows and is kind enough to post do you know how many Spits and where and when it happened?

Just interested….

There is a Mk9 single seat to two conversion near completion down near the south coast with MT818 coming back to the UK. However Im not sure how long that one will take to be back in the air.

Intrested to here of any other Tr’s that may be under restoration.

There are a couple of restoration projects on the go, both of which I think are “new” single- to two-seat conversions, not including the prospect of MT818/G-AIDN coming soon….

The four 2-seaters doing formation passes works for me.

Proplover – are there 2 more in restoration near completion ?

Sorry Moocher but I think you’ll find its actually show organisers having the will, 2 of the 4 are based at Duxford and I know the other 2 would be happy to attend.

Who knows by 2008 there could be 6!

The Sept 2006 Duxford show had all four currently airworthy 2 seat Spitfires attend. Unfortunetly the Saturday saw such high cross winds that the final Spitfire balbo was scrubbed and on the Sunday PT462 was unable to take off at the time of the display so only 3 flew (IAC161 as was, MJ627 and ML407) within the main formation.

Be nice if someone at Duxford could have another go at getting all 4 in the air together as a 4 ship – Hint! It would still be a first.

They find it hard to do things like that. It’s not up to Duxford, It’s up to the owners of the aeroplanes.

From Damien’s coverage of last Octobers DX show, post number 3 shows IAC161 and ML407 in formation

http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=63621&highlight=duxford

There was another DX show at which MJ627 and PT462 were present making four T9’s at the same show. Also one of the big Spit displays has 18 Spits in formation.

Duxford can boast many displays with several two seaters displaying together.

Many of their big shows are opened with the Griffon Spits flying in from one end of the field with the Merlins from the other. Two tail chases ensue simultaneously and generally opposite each other.

The T9’s also fly in formation in the Balbo.

Check the photo section for past DX displays.
