Sale on e-bay
In a word – Sick
By: Whitley_Project - 18th November 2004 at 09:52
This is trhe first time I saw this ebay listing – pity it’s now ended.
I just sent the seller a belated message telling him what a sick f*** he is.
For better or worse, movies like Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, computer games like Medal of Honor, Day of Defeat, flight sims etc, have made WW2 “popular” for lack of a better word.
Items that may have gone to serious collectors, museums etc where the history would be preserved, get bought up by people caught up in the latest fad. 101st Airborne stuff for example is in great demand because of Band of Brothers. All kinds of fakes being sold on E-bay, where they are listed as originals.
Sadly it’s the nature of things when people think they can make some fast money.

Ha Ha ,Trying to get through to E Bay customer services is like trying to get out Colditz whilst blindfolded.

Peter. I seriously doubt you will hear from them, if it doesn’t make them money it’s not going to be a high priority. I checked the seller’s current offerings tonight and he’s got a bunch of medals and the likes for sale so it would appear he makes his money off veteran’s personal items.
I’m going to be a gentleman in this instance and keep my opinions to myself this time…

Just an update.
Ebay was looking into it but I never heard anything back to date….

Well maybe he ought to be contacted or the media be allowed to contact him for an explaination,if i were a member of the deceaseds [spelling] family i would be very annoyed to put it mildly.
Please do not get the media involved as that benefits nobody. I would think a few messages to the seller should do the trick. Aviation archaeology is very well regulated in the UK (maybe overly so) this action hurts decent archaeologists. This chap does the man’s family and the archaeology movement a diservice. When we did displays, nothing personal was ever put on show. Such items are best left in the hole. Just my looney’s worth

Nope, sellers feedback history would indicate they are a dealer. 😡

It should’ve been given to the relatives or the nearest kin survivng and if not then if necessary either bury them with the remains or at least offered to a museum as a memorial.I certainly believe that this matter should be investigated, maybe it is an innocent reason,i e family selling but even so very bad morals.

Has anyone contacted the seller….?
Just emailed Ebay as this item falls under the banned as offensive items to be sold on ebay….
Possibly a bit late as the items have sold.
(But I admire your action)

The BIG question is did the person who recovered these items from the crash site obtain permission from the MoD? The law states that you must seek permission from the MoD – even if the aircraft crashed on foreign soil or was abandoned.
If so, then did he ask the MoD if they wanted the items recovered returned? If the MoD didn’t want them, then the items should be offered to the landowner. If not wanted by said landowner then and only then can the person who recovered the items keep them. The ammunition should have been handed to the police as soon as possible – no exceptions to that rule, I believe.
If this was an unauthorised dig then the person or persons involved broke the law and the items can be considered as stolen property. Anyone who deals in stolen property is committing a crime, etc.
OFF course we have got to hear from the seller – to get his side of the story. But I do think the MoD should be informed.

Unbelievable!
By: cnam100 - 3rd November 2004 at 13:03
Didn’t someone get sent to prison for selling parts of an aircraft that was a reigistered war grave in the past two/three years because they had recovered items from a crash site without having obtained the MoD license which is needed before any excavation of a crash site?
Wonder if these items were recovered from the site? (haven’t looked at e bay) If they were surely the terms of the licence have been broken. Anyone know the answer?

An absolute disgrace. The perpetrators should hang their heads in shame.

A Simple call to the Police then……
By: setter - 3rd November 2004 at 10:01
Hi
It is possible that this is not only appaling and in bad taste but could also be illegal in terms of violation of war graves legislation – I believe it would be classed as such here and quite a fuss would be made.
May he rest in peace
