Hi Everyone
Would anyone be able to tell me what the callsign code was on Handley Page Hastings C1 TG516 when in service with 99sqn (or 511 sqn) during the mid-1950s? It was Lyneham based. For some reason it is very elusive and is not recorded anywhere I can find.
Any help most appreciated
Thanks very much.
Kind regards
Martin Weir

Thanks I’ll try but after watching the programme on TV the other night I doubt the MOD will release anything about the tests.
Brgds.

Have you tried the AHB at Bentley Priory, they have over 1.5 miles of RAF Files on their shelves, over half of those shelves are still covered under the 30/50/75 year rule, I should imagine some would cover CI/Woomera/Maralinga, I always use the old maxim, if you don’t ask you don’t get;)

TG516
Hi John
So far tried Hendon – they say no records exist of the codes, 99 sqn, Flight archive, many books, even more photos, but only a vague mention in the 99 sqn history of it operating in it’s early days.
Even watched the the Christmas Island tests on TV and there was a Hastings – unfortunately could only see the top view. I do know TG516 did go out there at some point
Thanks for you help.
Brgds.

Martin
I know you asked about this on my forum recently.
I was in the ATC at this time early 50’s at Lyneham and flew regularly in Hastings from there. I never did fly in 516 though, she was in those days based with 53/99/511 Squadrons. I do recall a lot of the callsigns had GAC/GAD/GAN and JAM and JAR there was a picture of the latter two photographed together at Lyneham once.
I do know several of the lads that used to see the Hastings through down route to Edinburgh Field that worked in the Signals Section and knew call signs like the back of their hands in those days but not any more, sadly
You will see on the WEBSHOTS album below a whole album of Hastings pics but none show 516, she wasn’t Struck of Charge until 1972. Have you tried the curator of Hendon, they hold all the record cards there………..
ps I have just checked a couple of photos I took WD481 was GAP that was a Mk C2 and TG512 was JAD a Mark C1, if I come across anything I will let you know
