Have pilots ever been allowed to smoke during flight?

Just wondering, and i know its a bit random, but have commercial pilots ever been allowed to smoke during flight? Are they allowed to now? Are private pilots allowed to smoke during flight?

Well in response to EAL_KING im sure that the pilots can take a minute break to have a smoke, the plane is not gonna go down, theres autopilot and the FO or it could be the Cpt.

I suppose I’m talking about a designated smoking area on the plane and perhaps a limit on the amount of fags consumed. Probably unworkable I know, but flying can be quite stressful for a lot of people and I’d rarther fly with a happy bunch than a stressed out bunch who quite frankly can be more irritating than a bit of cigarette smoke.

As I’ve said I don’t smoke myself, but I don’t really have any major objections to it as long as I’m not being affected by it personally.

Sackable offence in any company I’ve worked for and quite rightly so. I wouldn’t knowingly let any of my colleagues do it either.

It was pretty awful for non-smoking pilots as smokers would just light up on the flightdeck. It also seemed that just about every flight engineer used to smoke as well. Most company ops manuals now preclude flightdeck smoking, in line with the cabin.

Prior to the switch to non-smoking airlines pilots were allowed to light up as well as the passengers. I don’t miss the days of those flights. blah.

Smoking does happen on flights, but the crews wont say anything because its against the Capt and/or FO.

I don’t mind smoking (as a non smoker) as long as it’s not right in my face.

I can’t think of a reason why there couldn’t be a partition put up to separate smokers/non smokers like they put up a partition to separate business class and the rest of us.

I’m not pro smoking but if it helps people relax on a long flight then I could probably put up with it within reason.
