Have You Met Anyone Famous?

Have you ever met anyone famous? If so, who? Also, if you haven’t, who would you like to meet?

I’d just like to remind you all that reviving a long-dead thread for no urgent and pressing reason is in clear breach of the site owners’ Code of Conduct.

Item 9 refers.

Many Thanks

I did a run for charity once and presented the check to Bill Clinton.
I didn’t meet anyone else, but I know Yoko Ono’s nephew.
My mom met Jackie Kennedy, IM Pei, Ariel Sharon (she was her neighbor), so on, so on,………………..

Colin McRae – uses the same motorcycle dealer that I do .
Dario Franchitti ( US Champ Car Driver ) and David Coulthard – both were regulars at Larkhall kart club , I still see Dario’s dad around .
Also a very sad claim to fame , the chap who kidnapped Ronnie Biggs twice from Rio , a certain John Millar McKillop , is my dad’s cousin.

Met Liam Gallagher in a pub in Basel once, and (is there anyone on here who hasn’t done security at gigs?) once almost refused Lenny Kravitz entry to his own gig cause he didn’t have his backstage pass with him (It could have been anyone… I mean, imagine walking about with a towel over your head so as not to be photographed).

Apart from that… bumped into Gavin Hastings outside Murrayfield a couple of years ago, but I think that’s about it…

His latest book is doing the rounds in Word format on the internet. Someone in the office sent it to me.

JAMIE OLIVER

Well my brother frequently visits that Yuppie English cook Jamie Oliver. He buys some of his vegetables directly from my brothers company in South Africa. I even have a book signed by him. Nice guy though! Always wears nice shirts :p.

Nobody in the A-list.

I met Joey Dunlop down the pub about 5 years ago. He used to drink at the Manx Arms (the Manxie) in Onchan in the Isle of Man, which also happened to be my local.

In the same pub (coincidence or what) I met Jan-Aage Fjortoft, the chap who used to play for Middlesbrough (my team). He was chatting up some very attractive young lady, then my friend Tom (who was blotto) moved over and burped at her. Jan-Aage lost his chance and did not look to be in the autograph signing mood as a result.

I caught the same flight as Chris Woodford (the annoying has been TV chef) once – he lives on the Island as well.

Finally, my dad was sat next to Nigel Mansell a decade ago on another local flight and got him to autograph a Manx Airlines timetable for me.

About 3 years ago, I got cut up at traffic lights in Hull be some arrogant b*stard in a Jaguar. It wasn’t two jags, but his equally annoying son.

Met a few famous faces but the all time best for me was Paul McCartney. I was working on a Saturday afternoon when he and Heather Mills were out shopping in my home town in my shop! Couldn’t believe it! After a couple of staff already saying that he said to other customers that he would not give autographs, I stood pondering “should I, or Shouldn’t I?” But then I thought “sod it!” I approached him and asked if I could be really cheeky… He looked at me with a polite grin and said “I won’t give autographs but I’ll shake your hand, otherwise we don’t get any shopping done.” The rest is history. Just a bit miffed I didn’t pick up a camera of the shelf, rip it out of the packaging and get a couple of snaps!

Had an interview with president Mengistu of Mozambique, that Maharishi guy (the Beatles hung out with him at some point), those being i think the ones with some international acclaim.

The list of Dutch celebrities/politicians/stars/royalty i met/hung out with/farted next to/interviewed is a longer one, but i won’t be bothering you guys with that. Few of them are worth mentioning their name.

Snapper: Timmy Page? Cool!

Oh yes it does. Jim Stewart, DFC, insisted on buying me a pint. And he’s a Scot to boot! Wonderful chap, a real cracker.

Got a few…

The one that meant the most to me (although I didn’t realise it’s significance at the time), was former RAF pilot Bob Stanford Tuck at our ATC camp at Manston in 1982. He was inspecting our fnal parade, and stopped to talk to the smallest and youngest cadet on parade – me. Can’t remember anything he said though. All I could think of was how lucky I was to be talking to a real Battle of Britain pilot.

========================

Funniest one was boxer Chris Eubank, who was guesting at an HP lash-up a few years ago. I was mullered, someone pointed him out so I went up to him to shake his hand (like you do when you’re a bit drunk). I’d always thought he must have been about 6 foot 6 or something like that, but when I got up to him I realised he was only about my height (5 foot 9), and the conversation went something like this…

SY – Are you Chris Eubank?
CE (smiling and shaking my hand) – Yes
SY (very drunk) – Nah, you can’t be. You ain’t big enough.

Thankfully he recognised the fact that I was nothing but a drunken buffoon, laughed, shook my hand, handed me another drink and sent me on my way. Phew!

=========================

Finally, I wouldn’t call this lot famous a such, but I did spend a week in the same hotel as the Sheffield Wednesday squad when I went to watch them on a pre-seaon tour in Sweden last year. The then manager, Terry Yorath, used to come out drinking with our group most nights, and on the last night there he let the players come out with us as well. Got vague recollections of pulling a rather well known ex-Republic of Ireland international defender’s head out of the flower pot he was being sick into… 😀

Oh, another Sheffield Wednesday one – David Hirst poured me a pint a couple of months ago. One of my heroes, supplying me with a beer. Life doesn’t get much better than that…
