Not wholly true….
The Apache pilot sits in the back, the CPG sits in the front CPG= co pilot gunner, there are controls in the front (extendable cyclic)….helicopters are cool….don’t knock em until you tried them!
is it correct that the pilot is normally an NCO and the ‘gunner’ is an officer (and captain) ??

i seem to recall it was XX166 that flew into the Isle of Man.

Hi Steve Bond. No, XX305 unfortunately crashed on finals at Valley following fumes in cockpit. IIRC, the instructor initiated command ejection after the aircraft rolled about 90 degrees. Both Mk 10 seats worked correctly. The instructor survived although badly injured.

Hi Camlobe,
My PC is at work and my records are at home, so I will have to check over the weekend. Certainly Sparrows did lose a Hawk while I was there, and 1982 sounds about right. I guess you are referring to the one that hit the mountain on the Isle of Man returning to Valley from Lossie? Then a Goshawk machine crashed at Mona around the same time, but the crew banged out safely.

Steve Bond, You might be able to refresh my memory. I think it was 1982 when we lost the first Hawk, XX305. Seem to remember it was one of yours (Sparrowhawk). A very sad day indeed.

I was there from 1981 to 1984, and had the great fortune to work on the CFS Hawk line (Sparrowhawk), which was right next door to the TAHS pan. The camera went to work with me every day!
i was on Goshawk, then TAHS (later named VAS to avoid confusing visiting aircrew!).
you’ll have missed the time xx223 crashed on the airfield, went wizzing across TAHS pan, and ended burning in the middle of sparrows!
after the investigation was over, the firemen cut the number 223 out of the side of the cockpit, and it was mounted on the crew room wall.

In an Apache, the pilot is in the back, and the gunner in the front. There is no dual control system. (If you talk about the ugly green eggbeater alse referred to as AH-64)

By: frankvw - 30th March 2006 at 18:53
The instructor sits in the back, it also permits him to see what the trainee is doing.

Spent just under four years there, 1979 to 1982. Gnats going, Hawks coming. Wessex at 22 Sqn, Whirlwinds at SARTU, and Hunters. And all the visitors. Broken F111’s a regular thing. Very busy airfield in those days.
i got there not long after you left (early ’84), but by then it was all hawks and wessex.
i spent nearly 2 years on TAHS (or visiting aircraft to the rest of the world!), and as you say, you’d get at least one or more F111’s in with an engine out, and quite often tornado’s as well. usually it was bird strikes.
there was quite a difference in the way the repairs were tackled, the yanks usually flew in a new engine and groundcrew the same day, in the back of a herk, but our lads would turn up in a few days in a sherpa minibus, then a four tonner would turn up a few more days later with the new engine!…..average F111 stay was just a few days, average tornado stay was over a week!

And then of course there’s the ASTRA Hawk from Boscombe Down which those who saw it arrive at RIAT last year would have seen it to have only one occupant and he was in the back seat!
Cos the aircraft is always flown solo by the rear pilot (front cockpit through computer!)….I was lucky to fly into RIAT in 1991 in the front seat. Sure did confuse the marshaller when I totally ignored his commands!!!
