Hawker Hunter in Honolulu

This morning as I was taxiing out for a trip from Honolulu to Pago Pago. Saw a weird aircraft taxiing. Looking at it couldn’t believe I was seeing a Hawker Hunter I didn’t know one was on the island. It was taxiing to Hickam AFB side. I only had my phone camera and got stuck behind a JAL 747 so couldn’t get a better shot. Maybe someone knows what’s going on with it.

It would appear to be the only way, either that or air freight in a C-17, seems a hell of a lot of trouble to provide DACT training ??

Very interesting. Begs the question how does a Hawker Hunter get to Hawaii ? It must be a 2,000 ++ mile flight from USA, does the Hunter have that range even with tanks, and thats a hell of a lot of faith to place in your single engine jet.

This is an interesting thread for those that didn’t realise how much the Hunter is still employed for various airforces (US, Canadian, British, French for example) support work, http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=101655&highlight=hawker+hunter
I dare say Firebird, HFL, and HHA might have some first hand knowledge of some of these operations!

Ah right, these guys ?

Seems a coincidence the Hunters have same paint scheme as the Canadians.

Gents

I think you’ll find the company flying out of Honolulu is named ATAC. The servicing, repair and finding spares for the Hunter is not a problem, if you know where to look.

Great to see these classic jets still earning their keep.

Yes, pretty much! There is a lot of stuff still available for the Hunter – most of the Swiss spares are in this country for a start. LAS still do all the hardware and so on.

This rasies a point that, my niaive, London-centric brain finds difficult to understand – but how on Earth do you service and repair a classic jet in a location so far from the UK?

I also wonder about that when I hear clever people are restoring Spitfires in the mid-USA etc. Is it as simple as DHL:confused:
