Help required in solving a puzzle please. During the course of going on the road the fibre glass nose cone to XE584 was damaged a replacement was purchased at Newark and has sat waiting for fitting for 12 months. Over the winter the old nose cone was removed along with a considerable amount of body filler to expose the forward rib to which the cone is fixed with set screws. The removed cone was fitted using 3 non standard self tappers. The new cone was checked against the old and they are identical in shape and size. When either cone is offered to the fitting plate it is obvious why the filler and self tappers were used. Both cones are to small to slip over the fitting plate and pick up the set screw fittings. The max external dimension of the cones I have are 385mm with an internal dimension of 370mm. Fibre glass is approx 7.5mm thick. The units carry 41H/339503 and B235498 Iss 1.
584 finished its service life as intrim FGA9 was built as a Mk6 but essentially was assembled from parts gathered from Louvex by The Maccelesfield Historical Aviation Society
I have tried taking several mm of the inside face of the damaged cone to get it sitting further back but even this has failed by around 10mm at a guess to get any where near the fixings.
Any one know if there are different size nose cones and if so what size I need and does any one have a spare?
Over to you XE584.

Some modifications affected the radome fitted.
I can’t see the part number you quote but here (attached) are F6 and GA11 parts catalogue pages:

Thanks Mark, that answers my question and means I have 2 of the smaller type to pass on.
If you come across the correct or hear of any leads you can mail me at aeroplanecol@aol.com as usual.
Thanks Graham.

I haven’t got my references to hand at present but there were 2 different sizes of radome for the Hunter, with the larger size fitting the nose cones of the later marks – FGA.9 certainly and probably F.6A and F.6 too.
The smaller size radome (as you’ve discovered!) isn’t much smaller, but is too small to fit the later nose cone.
I know this because I made the same mistake once and excitedly bought a new radome only to find it wouldn’t fit the nose cone on QA12! I’ve since donated my ‘too small’ radome to another project and, luckily, obtained the correct size one.
I’ll check but I don’t think I have a spare radome left now unfortunately, otherwise you’d be welcome to it.
