I’ve just caught up with the magnificent “Fighter Pilot” by Paul Richey. In his descriptions of manoeuvring hard, he talks about “adjusting the tailwheel” more than once. Is this slang for something else, or was it really pitch trimmer? If so, unique to the Hurricane or not? Just idle curiousity.

Ah ……so it’s “the wheel associated with the elevator on the tail” not “the tailwheel”. You would have to be pretty stupid to think you could wiggle the tailwheel from the cockpit, wouldn’t you? (I think I’ll crawl away from the forum now before anyone else notices………)
Thanks Baz -excellent forum

From the ‘Pilots Notes’
12. Trimming Tabs – The elevator trimming tabs are controlled by a handwheel (24) on the left hand side of the cockpit and an indicator is fitted next to it. Forward rotation of the hand-wheel corrects tail heaviness.

Hi Anorak
Welcome aboard (as long as you are not a dodgy glider pilot 🙂 )
The elevator trim could well have been adjusted with a ‘wheel’ as a trim wheel was fairly standard on many aircraft.
