Hawker Hurricane- images from parts manual?

On pages 85 and 108 of “The Hawker Hurricane a comprehensive guide for the modeller” by Richard A Franks there are images of the pilots seat and undercarriage door (see below).

Does anyone know what “crown copyright” document these images were taken from?

The Hurricane’s maintenance manuals and parts manuals contain many interesting drawings but no photographs of parts, it would wonderful if a parts manual was produced which utilized photographs rather than drawings.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Steven Smart

Thanks for the suggestions on chasing down the origin of the images which appear to be from an illustrated version the parts manual.

The Hurricane’s parts manual I have seen has line drawings in it, so I don’t believe that the images are from this manual.

I haven’t tried RAF Hendon, but thats a logical place to start. The “Aircraft Production” periodical sounds very interesting, I am very fascinated by seeing how aircraft were built (Even when they arn’t Hurricanes).

Dcollins103, thanks for suggesting I contact BAE Farnborough. Their website indicates they will be adding a Heritage section sometimes in 2007, I will look forward to seeing what they have!

Also, try and look for copies of the “Aircraft Production” periodical. The RAF Museum Department library has most of these, and each edition showcases the making of a particular type. Good examples I know of include the Mosquito, Hornet, Vampire, Typhoon, etc. These have some good reference photos too.

Well worth searching out – the two part article on Walrus construction was very enlightening (JDK – have you read it?)

Also, try BAE Systems at Farnborough. Their heritage department run by Barry Guess has a big archive. The de Havilland production line photo archive is certainly impressive. Don’t know about other makers though, but it’s worth a try.

Not a definitive answer for you, but some Spare Parts Schedules (part of the Air Publications for a particular aeroplane) have illustrations. The Tiger Moth’s has photos, the Lancaster’s has line drawings.

Spose you could enquire at RAF Museum Hendon – there’s a chance they may have what you are looking for?

Sorry can’t help mate, but I was looking for something similar from the pilots notes for the Westland Whirlwind… 😉 Namely where are the original photos that were taken for the cockpit gone…
