Hawker Hurricane L1700 Crashed near Saul Gloucestershire on the 28th of December 1940
Killing its Pilot Sgt T.D.Vernon.
I believe that the Sevenside Aviation Society was involved in a major recovery of this Aircraft in the early 80’s.
Does anyone know where the Recovered items may have ended up.
Many Thanks.Iain

Ant, I had forgotten that! Yes – because the ground was so soft I recall all the remains were in the ‘right’ place relative to each other. Certainly several Brownings came out. I also recall a lot of instrumentation and things from the cockpit area, and I have a vague memory of a control surface. I guess the main spar would have been in there too, if the guns were in place. The preservation was superb, with that anoxic black soil keeping fabric and webbing completely ‘as new’.
At the time the SAS was drowning in Spitfire and Hurricane remains, having visited several sites related to the fighter OTU’s at Aston Down (the attrition rate was very high in 1940-42), and so we might have been a bit blase about where things ended up (looked at with hindsight).

Ian,
Seem to remember this was the aircraft where the guns were all found in a row in the ground? Saw some pics many years ago, probably from ‘Whitey’. Interested to see pics of any of the Hurricane parts from Gloucestershire sites.
I think we visited a few Spit and Hurri sites ourselves when part of the MST. Ant.

Hi Iain
I was part of the digging team with the Severnside Aviation Society. I still have some small parts. I will go up into the loft and photo them for you. When the society folded many of the parts were given away to other groups, don’t where they went.
