Hawker Tempest on the move?

Just spotted MW763 at Grantham North Services at lunchtime. Passed it again going south with the wings/2nd engine on another flatbed going past Stansted turnoff. Going to North Weald??

The proportions are wrong, but they’re not much worse than those on MH434. But better a flying Tempest with bad roundels… 🙂

Are the roundels correct?

I always enjoy seeing photos of this machine as it looks so close to completion! It gives me a tingle to see it sitting on its gear in a hangar.

I look forward to seeing progress, regardless of engine fit or restoration standard.

A project from Gerry headed out to the U.S . Whether it returns to flight remains to be seen .

Thanks ET, have seen a few Centaurus but never a Mk 5 with the carb on the back, I assume Nixons are doing the engine or at least they were, will that change? Did Gerry have any Tempest sections or parts left after this rebuild, I have made some enquiries but there is no real confirmation that there might be more. Really looking forward to seeing this one progress, cheers, Pete

Thanks Easy Tiger. She is a big aeroplane not far of the size of the thunderbolt. I have known several pilots who flew the Tempest (all sadly gone now) and all loved it. Funny thing was not a single one was any more concerned about flying the Tempest with a sabre than flying any of the Merlin powered aircraft of the day. One also flew the Tempest II post war and thought it a step up from the V.

I stand corrected TN, they are in fact 3350s

Unless those P&W’s are R3350 Wright Cyclones or at the very least C model R2800 Pratts à la Corsair F4U-4 (can be rare) they would be a bit underpowered for the Tempest I would guess. But I can’t wait 😀

Fear not Pete, it will be fitted with the correct type of Centaurus. The 2 P&Ws came with the project. Presumably to cater for the american market option.
A more extended coverage will probably be provided as it progresses by trevor on the North Weald diary thread.
In the meantime, a couple from me

Autokraft were going to do two Tempests-one fitted with an American radial but when they finished the two projects moved on to Hemswell and the idea was shelved . The machine at North Weald has always been intended for a Bristol .

I believe she will have a Centaurus fitted up front. I’m guessing the P&W is a spare.

P&W ??? Will your CAA allow it to fly with an “experimental” engine installation? Don’t get me wrong, I cant wait to see it fly but I am keen to find out more re the engine installation!!!! Centaurus’ rule!!Pete

Confirmed I caught up with the convoy as I turned off the M11 at the Stansted turnoff. The wings and engine were on a second flatbed trailer 🙂

I think the Centaurus and the wings were on a different truck. I’m guessing the P&W was sold with it.

Er…..anybody notice anything strange about that engine? But great pictures; thanks for posting!

This is all very exciting; the prospect of something genuinely different in the skies. Can anybody give us a brief history of this aircraft; I’m not even sure what mark we are looking at?

Sorry, reading above, MW763 is a mark 2…..so Centaurus engine then?
