If its the one a friend of mine was offered recently it was a lot of money for the amount of airframe rare or not.

Before talking about an airworthy airframe, how about recreating a second static Typhoon instead. It’s about time.

On another forum for the type of motorcycle I own, in a thread about favourite engine sounds a guy claimed to have heard a Napier Sabre running about 35-40 years ago, was it on a surviving Typhoon/Tempest or are there any engines around which could have been the one? From the big crowd (+ me) around the guys running the Merlin, Griffon and Alvis Leonidies at last years ‘Legends I would certainly like to be there to see one fired up!

Well if KW and his resources can’t do it then it will be a very long wait :(.

The Sabre was a complicated piece of gear in WW2,even in todays language it,s understanding and servicing will be interesting.

You get the sense that there are aspirations to get a Typhoon or Tempest into the air but that the gap between aspiration and attainment is wide. I would certainly love to see it at a Legends in my lifetime……:)

From the man himself:
http://blog.kermitweeks.com/?cat=33
“My main goal right now is to continue with the airframe work, gather everything up, and paint it for static display with one day having the option of tackling the systems and the engine.” Weeks, Kermit. 20 June 2010. www.blog.kermitweeks.com
” …..my Hawker Tempest V project, which we are bringing up to displayable condition. Everything has been rebuilt to airworthy standards but we are currently just trying to get it displayable for Fantasy of Flight. I have two Napier Sabre engines for it and one day hope to make it fly!” Weeks, Kermit. 29 June 2008. www.blog.kermitweeks.com

it looks exactly the same as it did in 2000 when i saw it last, maybe a few added panels, the story then was ‘we are waiting for the engine’…save yourself the time and effort and wait for East Kirkby’s Lancaster NX611 to fly as you have more chance of that happening than MW763 flying,Concorde has more chance of flying…

Look under the survivors section here –
Best bet appears to be MW763.
Apologies if I have released classified information, but it is plastered all over the internet!

There was an article about Kermit Weeks’ Tempest V in ‘Aeroplane’ a couple of months ago- it won’t be flying for a while, is the gist of it!
