And here’s the result of two years research; eighteen months chasing correct instruments; and a complete reverse-engineering from scratch of the port; centre and starboard pilot’s instrument boards from Hawker drawings.
(The only non-standard parts are the port and starboard Thermotank Punkah Louvres -The correct 1½” louvres are unobtainable; so we’ve used 2″ Vampire ones; the flap indicator; and the gun sight spare bulb holder – both of which were also unobtainable and have therefore been built from scratch.)
This is as near as we can get to a Car Door 1B layout, from a few iffy, grainy photos and extensive in-depth research.
The photos in A.P.1804A and the Pilot Notes are actually of a Tornado Layout; and Hendon’s MN235 interior is non-standard; which all the modellers seem to fall for regardless of Tiffy version.

Unfortunately not; all the panels and ident. plates had been filched whilst it languished in the Chippenham scrapyard where it was discovered. From certain fittings however; we have established that it is an early one. This is how it first arrived at our workshop…

Great job. Nice to see another Typhoon coming back to at least part of it’s old self! Do you have an identity for the cockpit?
By: TempestV - 17th August 2017 at 10:33
Superb work.
Just out of curiosity, how much more can you add to your cockpit structure? You clearly have a lot of original parts to start with.
From following the project updates over time, I see you have re-built the frame, propogated it with many of the restored cockpit components, and now the firewall. Do you have any of the upper decking/cowling/door structure?
With the UK and Canadian Typhoon Project generating fuselage jigs, airworthy parts and assemblies, it would be excellent if these could also be used to assist projects such as yours.
Keep up the excellent work.

Following on…
Here’s our completely remanufactured Firewall. The original, totally knackered one was used as a template; (having firstly separated the front and rear panels and removed the asbestos sandwich under proper H & S conditions.)
It has been remanufactured using a modern non-asbestos fire Barrier material sandwiched between 18SWG aluminium panels, and almost all of the original fixtures and fittings were safely recovered…

Thanks for sharing these regular Typhoon updates. Excellent work.
These are exciting times for anyone interested in the Typhoon and Tempest, with so many projects helping to bring these types back into the limelight again.

Thanks, Gents;
We do our best with what we have.
The Car Door project is entirely self-funded with assistance from a small group of sponsors; and is at, the moment entirely separate from the Museum major funding.
A considerable amount of funding has been effected from Ex Cotswold Aircraft Restoration Group donated stock which one of the CARG members squirrelled away just prior to the CARG inventory being sold off to various dealers.
This preserved stock was then donated to the project; and such instrumentation etc, that was relevant to the project was included in the build. The remainder was swapped or sold to acquire further relevant items.
A few further items have been donated; and some items have had to be replicated from scratch.

Beautiful. I have an original stbd side panel that I sent drawings of to John L at your museum ages ago. I tried to get the vents, only had one.
Your work is exceptional and the project looks to be Benchmark
