Hawker Typhoon JP843

Hi All!

I’m hoping some of the archivists here could help me track down pictures and information on Hawker Typhoon JP843. From what I’ve found so far, it was from the fourth production batch of 600 aircraft built by Goster in 1943, fitted with a Sabre IIA but possibly modified to a IIB in 1944. Likely fitted with a sliding hood from new but not confirmed, the aircraft was initially issued to 197 Sqn before being moved to 609 Sqn and ultimately crashing on the 27th of July 1944 taking with it the life of Flight Sergeant Price. I am looking for any photos, movement history, maintenance history or modification data available and would greatly appreciate anything the fine folks of this forum could chime in on.

There is a great deal of work on the go in the shop, I’m now working on the next batch of parts for heat treatment, and will be on the home stretch to assembly when they come back!

Hi guys! 8 episodes in now and I’m starting to sort out some of the little things that make these more viewer friendly.

The most recent video covers informatiOur sea of Typhoon fixtures!on of the fixtures we have built for JP843, progress is very steady despite the COVID situation, and I’ve been able to really dig into to some of the early work on the next major assemblies.

Great stuff Ian – but seconded on the music! Better to kill it entirely when you’re talking!

Thank you very much gents! The Jet Age frame set is in transit to the UK now, and I’m putting together our last airworthy frame before sending  our set off for heat treatment. I’m very excited to start some assembly on the fuselage!

Hi Andy,

I’m very glad to hear that the videos are well received, they should become even more interesting as we get out of the introduction style episodes, and into the shop work episodes.

The guys at the Jet Age Museum Typhoon project have always been there to help when we need it. Every group can bring something to the table, and I was pleased to be able to use our tooling for a second set of frames.

It’s quite an honor to be able to play a role in the Typhoons resurrection on multiple fronts!

Hey Ian.
I’ve been enjoying your Youtubes (while wearing my typhoon T-shirt).
I saw your latest one and it really encourages me to see the cooperation between the teams striving toward the same goal!
Thanks for sharing the updates of your truly awesome project. I love it !

Hi Richard,

Great to hear that it’s showing progress well, I’ll have a look at the music issue, it’s supposed to be subtle! I’m learning as I go!

Thank you Ian

Absolutely fascinating, I didn’t realise the project was moving on at such a pace.

Could you do a version without the foreground music, I had to watch it three times to understand what you were saying in the background!

I hold a large part of the squadron archive. Not sure who this came from, possibly Allen Billam?

What an excellent photo Snapper, can I ask where you found this? I have yet to find any other pictures showing Peter Price, and I must say that he would have been a tight fit even for the Typhoon. Happy group of guys…RIP.

Super photograph it is wonderful to be able to put faces to the names but so sad that three of the four lost their lives. Typhoon pilots must have had one of the highest rate of losses during the Normandy campaign.

Raymond ‘Bav’ Bavinton (Aus.), Harold ‘Tich’ Freeman (Can.198 Sqdn), Roland ‘Roly’ Ashworth (Brit.), Peter ‘Prix’ Price (NZ.) Thorney Island. Bav was the only one of the four to survive.

Thank you Snapper,

I’ve found that there is a monument to P/O Price close to the church in Poussy-la-Champagne where he crashed, with the aircraft coming to a rest this far away from where he entered his dive, it sounds possible that he may have maintained some control of the aircraft before having to put it down. Very sad to see the huge losses to Typhoon pilots, young men often with very little time at their units. I am hoping to make a trip to the site, it would be wonderful to speak with the locals about that time in history.
