Brilliant shots. Any idea of the registration on the China Eastern A340?

Awesome shots Alex! The A340 shots are the best – its the only aircraft type that I wish would come to Manchester!

Send us a RAW and I’ll have a go at one if you like
Ha! You got there just before I did!

One thing with the Shadows/Highlights tool is that it creates ghosting around the edges. Any method of reducing that? Regardless, your edit brings out great contrast. The BA 744 needs a bit more, but the others are ok I hope?
I think that effect would be less if the editing were done on the original RAW file where you have the most data to play with. If you’d like me to have a go editing the original RAW file of that shot I’d be more than happy to. Just drop me a PM. 🙂

Just downloading it now. Already have CS2. Have your email address as you’re on the LHR Google group. May take a while to send.
Cheers mate,
Alex

Alex
Get a copy of RAWshooter. Workflow wise RAW shouldn’t add much time. I can knock a photo together in 5mins using RAWshooter and CS2. Just got to practise the workflow.
I do Levels, curves and Saturation in RAWshooter, then crop and sharpen in CS2. Infact I’ve forgetten how to edit a jpg in CS2 when you mentioned the dredded Shadow / Highlight tool, use very sparringly indeed, to much highlights all the noise in the image.

Thanks Paul! I do shoot RAW, but still very new to it really. All the shots you see above are JPGs. I set the camera to RAW+JPG so I can get quick edits on the net the same day they were taken. Usually take much more time with the RAWs, but still need a hell of a lot of practice.
Before I looked at RAW, I was shooting 300-400 shots a week, every week at Luton. Out of them, 200 would be selected and the prospect of processing all 200 in RAW was a bit too daunting.
One thing with the Shadows/Highlights tool is that it creates ghosting around the edges. Any method of reducing that? Regardless, your edit brings out great contrast. The BA 744 needs a bit more, but the others are ok I hope?
Thanks Paul, and cheers Snogger!

Nice work, Alex! Just one thing I’d recommend if I may, is to keep a close eye on the lunminosity histogram. I hope you don’t mind, but I made two very quick editing steps on your first 777 shot as an example.
If you look at the histogram on the original, it’s somewhat overexposed and the information doesn’t touch the left side of the histogram at all, meaning you don’t have anything in the lowest part of your first stop of exposure where all the dark stuff lives. This often means the contrast of the shot isn’t as good as it could be.
I reduced the highlights using the Shadows/Highlights tool in CS-2 and increased the low levels to improve the contrast a little, and this is easier to do if you shoot RAW. I know shooting slightly backlit aircraft is never easy, but you can still end up with reasonable results with careful control of exposure.
The original:

And a very quick edit:

I didn’t increase the saturation at all, but notice how the corrective measures with exposure have made the colours look more bold and less ‘washed out’. Getting a balanced exposure isn’t always easy in circumstances like these, but the histogram can be your very best friend!
Anyway, I hope that’s of some use. Nice work again, Alex. I’ll look forward to seeing more!

Great shots, love the first Qatar A340 touching down and the BA 747, check out the wing flex on that beast!

Parked in the visitors centre. Virtually empty, apart from a few spotters.
By: Manc - 28th August 2007 at 12:15
h I stood there for 2 hours waiting for the light to be right the other week. Patience is the name of the game sometimes! you get parked alright?
Weather doesn’t look great for this week either! typical! That spots going to be useless in a few weeks when it gets darker earlier!
