HD Telly.

Is it worth the extra £10 to Sky?
I’m pondering getting it in time for Christmas, but there only seems to be about 8 Ch. offering it.
Most of “My” TV is Nat Geo, History….all those up there past Ch 520.
Her indoors mainly watches Drama, none of us watch soaps or “Bottom of the bell curve” stuff like “I’m a celeb.”
Is it really worth the £10 a month? The demo stuff in the Stores always looks great, but it would wouldn’t it. They are trying to sell it.

I have a brand new 42″ Plasma Panasonic Vierra 42X1-24FRTTYYUIFFG556795048554555533GGHJI-445-55687GJLO with a twist.

A very long day and a very long meeting to discuss the 2010 redundancy schedule probably… ? Easily wound up under such circumstances. OK consider yourself ‘unignored’ again…:):D;):rolleyes

Now keep the noise down, I’m watching a hi-def documentary about Air Force One on Nat Geo HD. :diablo:

Phew Frew, I thought my praise of the Beeb had been totally misinturpreted!

Why on Earth has that rendered you to take offence?
Please answer, I am very intrigued.
If you have put me on the ignore, somebody else please quote it so RF can read it.

When I said missed the boat, I meant that all the best broadcasting brains in the world (And I mean that…not just ‘cos you work for them) work for one company, they could have controlled the whole lot instead of Murdoch. Imagine that….the BBC with money!

Last time I checked the entire BBC tv and radio output was available on both Sky and cable… Slightly less so on Freeview but more so on Freesat. The i-player is still only available as a tv option on cable too…

Sorry about your project though. :p

Aye, but the BBC missed the boat on Satellite. They missed the boat on cable too. Glad they still make the best progs (Of the 5).

IMHO it’s worth not giving Rupert Murdoch a single penny ! 😎

Aye, but the BBC missed the boat on Satellite. They missed the boat on cable too. Glad they still make the best progs (Of the 5).

Anyway, my project is postponed: –
(a) They want £49 for the box and £60 for the install. No offers unless I increase my package to Films or Sport. No, don’t want them, the Sport I watch is MoTD or the Olympics. I’m an existing customer you see, only new customers get free stuff. I’ll see ifere is any offers in the Springtime.
(b) They have to run a 2nd cable to the new Sky box. Entry point of cable 1 is behind our 10 foot fully dressed Christmas tree! (And I don’t want cable 2 to be 5 feet from cable 1!)

Sounds like it. Do you think your “words” will fall on stony ground or are there some enlightened bods up in your neck of the woods?

Quite a few, not to mention some angry viewers. We’ll see …:)

Good question !

To free up bandwidth for other projects, kind of defeats the purpose if you ask me ?

BBC-HD reduced the broadcast bandwidth in August from 16Mbps to 9.4Mbps, almost half of what it was. Sadly, although it still looks great it no longer looks ‘brilliant’. Some of us who shoot this stuff are thinking about ‘having a word’…;)

This is interesting. Where can I go to get more info, other than the obviously biased info from Virgin? I have a Skybox now so can I simply replace it with the Virgin box or is there some tecchie stuff involved? And sorry, I am a wimp in matters televisual – HDMI?

There’s not much between the Sky and Virgin HD boxes to be honest. Sky has two tuners, Virgin has three. I think Sky boxes have bigger hard drives too, not sure ?

If you want to swap one for the other I’d assume it’s a matter of ‘discussing contracts’ with one and the other.

I have a Virgin Media ‘V-Plus’ box, similar to Sky Plus but with an extra tuner built in. The box is connected via HDMI and therefore performs an upscaling operation on standard definition output. I think this makes a big difference, certainly better than Freeview. It even makes some of my own efforts look in focus !:D

The quality of what you are watching also depends on the initial capture as Ren Frew says, when the original programme is made. the US based channels like “FX” show a lot of NTSC based shows that look ok in HD, the colours can still look like the they were painted on the screen by a 5 year old!

Sky Sports was the clincher for me, the cricket and football there have image clarity that take your breath away and non of the “blocky” images that you see (especially on any ITV channel where they compress everything) while surfing last night I jumped from Sky Sports to ITV 4 to check the scores and it was like having cling film put across the TV.

The blu-ray is also worth it, especially now the cost of the players and discs is coming down. Or like me, you buy the kids a PS-3, get brownie points from the Mrs for splashing out, and then use it to watch blu-rays!

I have HD television on a 42″ Hitachi and yes the channels are limited but personnally I think it’s worth it. If the program has been filmed with HD equipment it looks fantastic, and even older programs benefit from it to an extent.

I watch BBC-HD, Nat Geo-HD, MTV-HD and ESPN-HD worth it for those alone. Certain so called HD channels get away with showing old 4:3 sit-coms and the like by placing them within a 16:9 hi-def border, laden with useless captions and info.

If you like wildlife and nature stuff then things like Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Life and Yellowstone will leave you gasping in awe. Fully interlaced 1080 broadcasts like ‘Later with Jools’ are also rarther impressive, but then I would say that wouldn’t I ?

Anyone thinking of going HD, be sure and get a tv that’s fully capable of resolving all the detail 1920x1080p is best.

Oh don’t forget, it’s not all on the telly, a nice Blu-Ray dvd player should be next on your list ! 😉
