In another forum I noticed a question relating to the BoB movie.
One of the He-111 (Casa) bombers had a pod/tank slung underneath in front of the ventral gunner’s position.
Most readers assumed it was movie gear, as it seem too flimsy to support a weapon, or an external fuel tank.
Does anyone know what it is?
The picture is from the BoB movie.

It was an ML type G winch.

Yes I would say originally for TT,looking at the tailplane reveals what appears to be tailplane /fin protection wires and their support structures. These would have kept the tow cable clear of the tail control surfaces.

agree…..was for target towing

I’m pretty (95%) sure it’s a target-towing set-up – housing for a winch or some such?
To be honest, I don’t even notice it any more! 😀

I thought that could be a camera pod?

Thats also possible, did the Spanish air force use them for towing?
I flew target tow once (as a winch operator), but we had the winch inside the cabin.

I was always under the impression that it was a target towing pod.

Thats a very good and logical guess.
Somewhat strange they didn’t try to hide the smoke generator, but thats movie people for you.
Any other guesses, or maybe people who worked on the set.

I think its for generating smoke, as it always gets shot down.
