I was following my nose looking into the Focke Wulf Ta 183 Huckebein and the Messerschmitt P.1101 (which “became” the Bell X5, an interesting story in its own right) and they were both designed to use the Heinkel HeS O11 jet engine. Wikipedia (link below) says that this engine was tested mounted on external hardpoints under the fueslage of a HE-111 bomber! Really? Anyone have any more on this, and maybe miracle of miracles, a photo?

Years ago when I did my unit projectionist course in the army I saw footage of a He-111 with one under each wing. It took off with the piston engines idling and both jets fell off as she went over the trees at the end of the airfield. No idea what happened to the airframe as that was where the clip ended. I think the pilot may have been able to go around and land if he’d been on the ball (or she) but if the full concentration was not on the job in hand then I fear the 111 ended up as an aluminium ball just beyond the tree line.

Wow, thanks for that. I wonder how the testing process went. For example, was the 111 flown with that engine in addition, or perhaps on that engine alone at cruise, etc. Anyone have a book or similar that comments on the test program? Thanks D
