HE 111 over Cornwall 1941

Hi,
Have just read this thread about 1941 event off Falmouth.

Details that I have that are as follows.

25-6-1941
At 03.30 in Falmouth Bay in the sea off Coverack.
E/a He 111 crashed into sea. One member of crew seen to be swimming towards shore. Rescued by local motor boat and conveyed to Police Station.
Survivor Mella Hoffman, wearing a “V” stripe on left arm. Handed over to RAF Intelligence Officer.
On 27-6-1941 the body of a second member was picked up from the sea in Falmouth Bay by a Naval Patrol Boat and landed at Cadgwith. Found on the body was an I/D Book numbered 627. I/D Number 142/51902 in the name of Geord Lohmann.
A/c was from Nantes.
There were a few POW Camps here in Cornwall at No. 115 White Cross near St Columb Major, No.674 Consols Mine at Par and two at Launceston No.257 Pennygillam and No. 406 Scarnecross. Hoffman may well have been Kept locally for some time.

Hope that this is a help.
Alex

Hi Jerry

That is the one so many thanks for the information. 😀

Do you have any other details in your files such as
where the aircraft came down ?
Where was Hoffman picked up ?
Who was he captured by ?
Where was he held as a POW ?

Cheers

Hi Jerry

Thank you for the response. You have given me a couple of leads I did not know about.

Regarding your couple of questions, I was told 1942 but it would make sense to check 1941.

Can you please check your files for names of the survivors ? Was there a Willy Hoffman among them ?

Cheers

The local historian Robin Hood might know something but I don’t know his contact details.

Send a PM to Andy akaH.M.S Vulture‘, as he’s also a member of D.A.A.R.T

And see HERE also.

You’ll probably need volume 3 of the Blitz, May 1941 to My 1945, although it has very little about Falmouth in it, or the 1941 incident. It’s very thorogh but does have omissions like any big book. The local historian Robin Hood might know something but I don’t know his contact details.

Hi
I checked my files and I have nothing for this date,
307Sq got some dornier 217’s, but these were a few day later.

Is there anything in the police war diaries at the cornish record office, to give you a lead?

Try a post here and if possible give the survivors name.

If you don’t get an answer there you are in for ‘a long job’

just an thought, do you have the right year/ or a typo ?

I have in my files , a HE-III , 25th June 1941, 03:30 hrs off Falmouth, three killed, one POW, by A/A fire

Cheers

Jesse. Thank you for that suggestion. I found the Cemetery website and I will follow it up.

Ian. Thank you for the suggestion. While overseas recently, I met a another pilot who knows of one survivor and wanted to know more of what happened from local sources. I have been unable to find anything so far hence the request for help.

The ‘Blitz then and Now’ is always a good start for Luftwaffe losses, nothing for that night listed. Will look for Falmouth later. What’s your interest?

Hi there Flyingphysio,

Just a thought, does the German War Cemetry at Cannock Chase keep a listing of who, where and why ? I know its a long shot but most Germans who
lost their lives over here are there, Maybe they have a Website. Or wait for
one our experts to come up with something, like they do.

JJ.
