I have been reading up on Griefs in the Griehl and Dresser book.
On the colours for KG40 aircraft I am confused!
The front cover of the book has a 3 tone blue artwork.
Looking at the photographs I see a single base blue colour with a single colour demarcation of the splotches ( technical terms).
Checking Ullmans book on RLM – It could be proposed that it should be RLM76 with RLM75 lines.
Checking the internet – I get RLM 76 with RLM 65 with 70/71 as well as RLM 65 with splotches in 02 and 73 (!) With several variants thrown in as well.
I also think there is some confusion between KG40 and KG100 aircraft in the descriptions people are using.
Does anyone have any real data on the colours of KG 40 He 177’s at Bordeaux Merignac?

Hi guys…
According to a caption for He177A-5, WNr.550043 on page 112 of “Heinkel He177 Greif” by J.R.Smith & E.J.Creek [Classic, 2008],
“…II./KG40 adopted an unusual camouflage scheme of pale blue grey (RLM76) with a broad pattern of dark grey (RLM74) oversprayed. On this aircraft, this scheme seems to have covered the whole of the fuselage, but the undersides of the wings, horizontal tail and engine nacelles remained pale blue (RLM65). This aircraft also had white spiral markings on its black spinners”
These image links to the Bundesarchiv photo archives show other examples of the Bordeaux-Merignac KG40 He177A-5’s:

Brian
It does not give actual RLM colour callouts, just a profile
Best Regards

Good evening,
If you have access to it, I recommend Kampfflieger volume 4, Bombers of the Luftwaffe, in the series Luftwaffe Colours by Nick Beale, page 313. It shows a colour profile of F8+FH of 1/KG40 at Bordeaux-Merignac summer 1943.
Hope this helps
Best Regards
Ian
