He111 Tail Fin

Whilst visiting the IWM Duxford last month i saw this He111 tail fin, recovered from a lake in Norway ?
It struck me, what happened to the rest of the aircraft ? did the whole a/c get recovered ? any photos ?

The East Kirkby ‘Heinkel’ is indeed a steel tube cockpit used in the BoB film.

Which cockpit would that be?

To my knowledge, it was a film mock up.

In one of the buildings theres a night bombing, Blitz type thing. I assume thats the one, but I thought that was built for some film or other….all very vague on my part.

I remember a part of the gondola in the scrap bin at DX in 1982, so I liberated one of the small square perspex windows and its frame. I’m glad I did, the skip was taken away and emptied a couple of days later!

Yeah, i read the caption, but it did not say much about what was found, shame when you think back, how complete this aircraft must have been, in that lake.

anyone any pictures of the other sections ?

Jules

The aircraft was set on fire and mostly burnt out before it sank.

I understand the other cockpit he had is the one at East Kirkby.

I beileve that the rear fuselage, tailplanes& some wing sections went to Colin Waterworth for his He111 project but this has since moved on.

Hi, it was Colin that owned the parts mentioned in my thread, they were displayed at Firbeck with SYAM for a time prior to him selling them on.

The cockpit was restored by the museum & displayed at the Waddinton air show.

I understand the other cockpit he had is the one at East Kirkby.

Hi Dragon Rapide, you are right about their being sections at IWM in the 1980’s.
I seem to remember that fin at Duxford & other ” missing” parts inc wings & engine are from 5883, which along with the cockpit & forward fuselage sections of CASA 111 no;- 150 are under restoration- see the preserved axis aircraft website

We had some nice parts from a He-111 recovered from a fjord in Norway at the Rebel Air Museum, including some nicely preserved engine cowlings. Would this have been from the same machine perhaps?

I recall there being some wing sections that I was told were from that aircraft over on the North Side – that would have been mid-1980s. Long gone now…..

Years ago it was just leaning up against a tree outside one of the buildings that used to be occupied by The Essex Aviation Group. I have a picture of it with a very youthful Mr Vizard and myself standing alongside.

The information panel says;

‘IPTC Caption This aircraft, possibly serial number SR2117, was shot down on April 26, 1940 over Storvatnet Lake, Norway following an abortive attack on a Royal Navy destroyer. Based in Hamburg until the Invasion of Norway, it was part of the first Squadron of the 122nd Reconnaissance Group, which flew both the He-111 and the Junkers Ju-88. The tail fin and engine were recovered by an RAF dive team in 1974 with other parts, including the wheels and fuselage, which went to other locations.’

Jules, whilst taking the photo did the caption in front of it not give you the answers you needed? Its been so long since i looked at this piece i cannot remember what it actually says.
