He111 tailfin at Duxford

Can anyone ID this He111 tailfin, i.e. the Werk Nr? Would also be intersted in any info re how it got to Duxford, is it there now, who owns it etc.

I have TBoB, T&N MkV, plus the three volumes of TB, T&N, so page nos will do for any references in there.

Yes Dave, they arrived at the museum today, much to their puzzlement 😀

I wonder if the IWM would swop it for two Short Sturgeon wheels!!

Hi,

Yes I thought i’d be diplomatic by putting A**oplane Monthly, as on other forums (relating to the r/c tank fraternity) they dont like mention of whose the other side of no-mans land.

Geoff, did you get photocopys of the article on the recovery ok ?:D

“I have TBoB, T&N MkV, plus the three volumes of TB, T&N,”

There’s some creams you cn get for that Von P 😀

Although having MkV isn’t something you want to get rid of, as his posts are quite useful! 🙂 😀

Just because you are paranoid, doesn’t mean they are out to get you. – Aeroplane Monthly Aeroplane Monthly Aeroplane M… Oh, Hi, Ken, how’d you get in? 😉

Does the webmaster block out the word aeroplane or only when it has a capital letter at the front – Aeroplane?

Geoff,

Yes Dave’s correct, it is in ATB No6, I’m probably confusing it with the Gladiator wreckoverys (well it was 20+ years ago !!).

I’ll pop a photocopy in the post today to you.:D

Heinkel

There is an article on the raising of a He111E wreck for the IWM in After the Battle Issue 6 . Unfortunately no wk.nr. given , and the picture of the plate only shows SR2117 , 3.39 , Heinkel Werke GmbH Oranienburg.
Lost April 26.40 over Storvatnet due to engine failure. There are sites on the Net you can cross reference that , notably ‘Luftwaffe Over Norway ‘ [ SIG]

Thanks for the info Dave.

I don’t suppose anyone knows which issue/year the article in A.M. appeared?

In the meantime, can anyone answer my original questions, or tell me where it was recovered from?

Geoff,

This wreckage was recovered by the same RAF sub aqua team that pulled the Gladiators out of the lake in Norway in the 70’s.

There was am article on it in an old A***plane Monthly. The rear fuselage eventually went to Colin Waterworth for use with the CASA 2-111 nose (via various other group/s), but that project was sold & moved to Europe (?).

I’m sure there were other large parts (wings ?), but i think IWM only kept the fin.
