I have never really liked flingwings, but as air ambulances their use is justified…..just.:)

Eggbeater slagging off is a tradition here Rocketeer. I wouldn’t take it too seriously. They are as much a part of aviation history as proper, beautiful, graceful airframes.

Moggy

I never take anything that serious Moggy old chap!:)
My dream (well, one of the more printable ones and definitely not the one involving Keira K and a large can of squirty cream, a stick of celery and a flying helmet!:D ) is to see Chinook ZA718 ‘BN’ saved for history in the RAFM

Ah, that kind of Westland Whirlwind!
Have two more different aircraft types ever carried the same name, and built by the same company.

A field full of the American versions of the Whilrwind, the Sikorsky H-19, are appearently available. I understand that the Chandler Memorial Airport in Arizona is scheduled for redevelopment…so 50-60 helicopters will have to go…somewhere. Most are in at least as good of shape as this aircraft.

That will be a terrible shame. Nothing as eloquent in saying ‘sic transit gloria mundis’ better than a dusty bit of desert packed with a whole bunch of aircraft from a bygone era! And with AMARC these days stuffed with boring stuff like F-16s and A-10s, sites like the Chandler H-19 park are becoming way too rare for my liking…

Rocketeer… Yes!!! You hit it on the head. Aside from a few of us rotary wing fans, helicopters are too often neglected.

And for our helicopter loving friends in North America…

And from a personal inspection, I know there are lots of parts to make nice statics.

The Whirlwind was recovered from Dishforth circa 1997/8 by myself and some members of SYAM on behalf of RAF Manston History Museum. It has never been on the camp at Manston so it’s got no connection with the fire training area. The fire training area is incredibly limited access – regards the Phantoms – only one has ever been burnt there – one F-4J (UK) has been scrapped by the Mod and another is used for evacuation training.
Regards the condition of the Whirlwind – there is incredibly little corrosion in her as most of her was reskinned during base maintainance at RAF Finningley with aluminum .

Regards a rotor head – leave it with me !

Im more intrigued that an airframe managed to escape from Manston, I thought once they got grubby asbestos gloves on an airframe it was toasted for sure. Or is it just their F4’s that applies to?

Oh speaking of which, if anyone knows how to “legally” get into the place without the RAF throwing their toys then can u drop me a PM to prevent thread jacking.

Bex

how times change i can remeber as a fourteen year old merrily climbing in over and amongst the fire dump at Manston. I looked up once and saw a official lookibg landrover but they didn’t seem that bothered with us and drove off! Now if only i could remeber what i was climbing on, i’m sure there was a javelin there , some whirlwinds and maybe a Vulcan . Time can play tricks on your mind!

all in good fun… I served a few years on SAR with the Sea Kings of Leconfield, and to be fair, helecopters do have their place. Whats the history of this one? Is it worth saving given that most of it is mag alloy and also given the extaordinary lengths people such as YHPG go to to restore whirlys? I must be honest, if it was cheaper I’d go for the whole aircraft just to get the rotor head.

Oh, and as a complete aside, when a close family member was dying on the road following a terrible car accident, did the air ambulance only a few miles away get scrambled? No. He had to wait over 30 minutes for a road ambulance. More funding for the air ambs needed!

RIP Scott. Always thinking of you mate.:(

No helecopter can actually fly. They are so ugly, the earth repells them…

I’ll give him a tenner for it. Then burn it.:dev2:

dont you dare! there is nothing wrong with a whirlwind! its such a shame to see one in this sort of condition 🙁
