Heads up!! BBC East.

BBC East on Monday 23rd October at 7:30 pm

Inside Out This is a local, area of interest programme.

..after sixty years of secrecy, Inside Out reveals a suspected German airborne plot to invade Britain.

There are two other short stories on as well so I don’t know how much they will delve into this, might be worth a watch.

Does anyone out there know of this??

Brian.

The piece referred to the so called ‘Dutch Barns’ which are within two miles of where I am typing. There are two on the road to Cantley, off the A47, and a further 3 on various back roads around Lingwood, Strumpshaw and Burlingham.

The suggestion was that the farms were owned by dutch co-operative, who were Nazi sympathisers, and they marked out rudimentary airfields adjacent to the barns.

I have heard bits of the story before, but this was the most complete piece I had seen on the subject. All are within a couple of miles of one of the biggest sugar factories in the UK, so the counter argument that they could have just been used for sugar production was quite plausible.

Seelowe

Check the threads, I mentioned it last week!

Andy, re Operation Sealion.
By coincidence there was a bloke on the Antiques Roadshow last night, filmed at Bishops Auckland by the way, and he had got a complete set of the original German documentation on the subject, all in faded green folders. This had been prepared in the late 30’s and consisted of battle plans, marked up OS maps, ariel photos and strangely enough, lots of seaside picture postcards, all marked up with lots of arrows and notes.
He claimed he had obtained it via a relative who had got it out of Germany in 1944, but he was very vague on the subject.
The ‘expert’ was most impressed and reckoned there were only 4 such folders in existance, he put a value of £3-4000 on it but reckoned it should be in a museum.
Have you ever seen one of these things, it did look quite fascinating, even with my limited knowledge of the German language, I reckon I could spend hours going through that.
Pete.

Yes, I had one or two of those sets too. They are not THAT rare and were produced in quite large numbers for the invasion force and included a book of reproduced postcards from 1930’s Britain showing points of interest. I think I let the last set go for around £400 to £500 and that wasnt long ago so I think £4,000 is a bit optimistic….that is, if the folder is the same one. Sounds like it to me. Andy
