Heads Up – Buccaneer on the move

Via another forum, from Wiltshire Police

At approximately 8:30am on Sunday 8th May 2011 a specialised load transporter
carrying a Blackburn Buccaneer Aircraft, will be escorted by Wiltshire Police
from RAF Kemble to Bruntingthorpe Airfield in Leicestershire.
The transporter and its load will measure 6.09 metres (20ft) wide, 4.94 m
(16ft-03ins) high with an overall length of 25m (83 ft) and gross weight of 44
tonnes.
Due to the size of this transporter it will be slow moving and will have the
potential to create congestion. Wherever possible disruption will be kept to a
minimum but hauliers and motorists are asked to please be patient if they come
across this load. Anyone travelling over this period to catch a flight or meet
appointments should allow sufficient additional time.
Regular updates and travel information in respect of this abnormal load will be
passed from our control room at Devizes when appropriate to help motorists plan
their journey.
The journey will begin at 8:30am from RAF Kemble, Cirencester, where the load
will be transported in convoy. It departs Kemble on the A429 before travelling
South on the A419 to arrive at junction 15 of the M4, before continuing
eastbound on the M4.

re;

I am sure when time money and resources all come together she will look fantastic.

Those of us who have the time but no expertise or transport will simply have to be patient!

It appears she was maybe art less after all – my mistake. Shame though.

Isn’t that what the pirates flag, mission symbols, and general pinkyness is about?

There was a lot more artwork on the starboard side. πŸ™‚

My comment on it being in the right place is based purely on the amount of Buccaneer expertise at Brunti right now. In a few years, when (if!) she is live again, it could move on again….

894 and 900 are up to fast taxi standard and 544 slow speed if the left engine will start 889 will probably have a survey and remedial work such as putting wings on after open day although no one can remember who took out and the whereabouts of wing pins

re;

Apologies. There were two last time I was there. Whats the story with number three? Only time I have ever seen a Buccaneer run – what a fantastic sight.

re;

Absolutely fantastic. Who would have thought we would ever see three Buccs together again?

Funnily enough, it was the news footage in the late 80s that got me into this hobby in the 1st place. The S2bs had been updated and were expected to see many years more service. Being only 9, I wanted to grow up and fly one. Imagine my disappointment a few years later when I got a paper round, bought my 1st flypast (which I still have) and found these lovely a/c being retired almost immediately after an expensive update. I never got to see one fly.

This ghastly policy of spending absolutely billions on upgrading a/c (Jaguar, Tornado, Harrier, Buccaneer) only for them to become range targets within 3 years, must stop.

oh you have some fun with that one ahead of you. She has less cut looms than our Lightning did, but to give an idea, it’s taken 8 months of 36 manhours a week to re-loom 300odd circuits on ZF579. Hope you have a bumper supply of batteries for your DVM Francis!;)

yep bucc wheels are almost as much a pain as vixen ones, as i can now testament too, plus all the foam in that one. Hopefully there will be a census to at least get her to either hyds or electrics if it’s the latter ffrancis willl have a job for life on those looms

You’re not kidding Matt, there’s an awful lot of re-wiring!

Why did they leave the Bucc’s air-brakes open, surely that would make it much harder for the truck on the motorways…?
:rolleyes:

Closed it would have overhung the rear of the truck, also when closed they are far more difficult to see, being open they present an easy to see item for other drivers making the load safer for its transit down the road – Mike

Wouldn’t make much difference, won’t increase the span/load width at all but will make it slightly shorter if anything.

To be made a runner?

Sorry if I’ve missed something here as I’m on my mobile looking at this thread…. Is she to be made LIVE or more of a static display mascot for the other three?

You need one nay sayer!:D
Personally speaking I think it’s a shame that XX889 has moved, it is now just another Buccaneer among the other three at Bruntingthorpe, which deprives some of us to the South West of the country of being able to regularly view the example at Kemble.
It seems that in the end that most classic jet activity will centre at Brunty, this is in no way to do down the excellent collection and work carried out there, but just nice to have types spread around a bit.
