Just received advance warning from production company Darlow Smithson, that a programme with which we assisted earlier in the year, will shortly see light of day on the TV Channel 4 in UK.
‘Fighting the Red Baron’ is a one and a half hour programme which explores WW1 aerial combat and compares them with techniques used by RAF pilots today.
We were delighted to offer several ‘props’ for filming at Sywell, including the ‘Biggles Biplane’ BE-2 replica and Paul Ford’s Fokker DR-1 replica. There was also quite a bit of filming at Old Warden too – and I know quite a few forumites were involved too.
Should be interesting to see the finished article!

As The Blue Max has said, Channel 4 decided to take the programme out of the 9 Nov schedule as it is such a strong film they don’t want to ‘bury’ it against the big-viewing Life on BBC1 and Flash Forward on FIVE.
They apparently also feel that it is good enough in its own right to not need the peg of Remembrance week to hang it on. Quite a complement to the IWDS team!
More news shortly – and more pics at www.biggles-biplane.com 😉

Have just been informed that Channel 4 have now pulled the date of the 9th as they dont wont it to go up against BBC “Life” and channel 5’s “Flash Forward”. No indication of a new transmision date as yet.

Thanks for the heads up – i’m in it! I was one of the groundcrew in the Shuttleworth filmed scenes, so you’ll frequently see me in my brown overalls rushing about (and boy it was a hot two days). Fortunately i’ll just be back from a long weekend in Mons so will be able to catch it
Surprised they kept the (in my opinion) awful title though, the crew at Shuttleworth reckoned it was just going to be a working title
Be worth watching just to see you sweating then Rob 😀
I would imagine that the title was retained to get ‘bums on seats’,The Red Baron is probably the only pilot ‘name’ from WW1 that most people recognise.
Thanks for posting LnS and pics…will have to watch out for it.

Yes Josh Levine is involved:)

Presumably this is the Darlow-Smithson production?
If so, I was almost involved….but then they changed direction!
Is Josh Levine to be the presenter/historian?
