Heads up – Science Museum exhibition

Inside the Spitfire, a new exhibition at the Science Museum, opens on 15th August 2005 to mark the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

This exhibition offers a spectacular view of the most famous British fighter plane of the Second World War stripped down to its original structure and deconstructed to reveal the complexity inside.

Inside the Spitfire also includes personal stories of the people who built, maintained, and flew the legendary aircraft.

Suitable for all the family and educational groups. This free exhibition will be located at the front of the Museum on the second floor.

Sorry Roobarb, you’re quite right, although I should point out that ‘664 is being being worked on in the HFL hangar alongside thier other Spits,or atleast it was a couple of weeks back.

sorry ANT
“664” has always been in ARC side of hanger who are undertaking the work on behalf of the Science Museum.

“Are they actually going to have a stripped down Spitfire, or is it just some sort of metaphor?”

Spitfire Mk.22 PK664 (formerly gate guard at RAF Binbrook) has been taken out of storage at RAFM Cosford and is now being worked on by Historic Flying Ltd at Duxford in preparation for the display.

As usual your info is rather astray of the mark. HFL do not do third-party work. The display preparation is being done next door at ARC. I do believe it says so in Flypast and Aeroplane this month.

News! Not History Please. :dev2:

According to my profanisaurus dictionary….Hi-Octain is another word for a muppet who is high on 8 cans of fanta! 😀

Well done Moggy for providing more news of this event….should be great. Though not sure ‘compexity’ applies to a Spitfire!!

You might not think it important. There are plenty who do.

The Science Museum does put on a splendid show as a rule.

And then pop upstairs to say ‘hi’ to some aircraft used by some of the bravest aircrew around.

I know Guy Black is loaning some Spitfire artefacts and I will be loaning some of my ‘Spitfire Fund’ material.

It seems the Exhibition will be on for about 18 months.

One not to be missed by Spitfire aficionados.

News to me, thank’s Moggy. As I haven’t been “up the smoke” for many years I might take a look after going to the Enbankment Monument opening in September.

To be honest, the chances of your getting anywhere near the Battle of Britain London Monument on the day of the unveiling (18th September) are very slim indeed. All the available space on the embankment itself, of which there isn’t a lot, has been quite rightly allocated to the veterans, and to representatives of those veterans no longer with us.

Even the Battle of Britain Historical Society, who are responsible for the monument, have had to arrange for two large ‘boats’ to be moored by the monument so that its members can view the unveiling. At the moment, places are only available to BoBHS members, at £50 per head, though the plan is for unsold places to be made available to the general public, possibly at £100 per head. I would expect that these boats will sadly also hide proceedings frfom those on the other side of the river.

See here http://www.battleofbritain.net/bobhsoc/monument.html#booking for the ‘official’ version of the above.

Now, back on to the topic, the exhibition also includes some ‘personal’ relics etc. from our museum relating to the Spitfire, so I’m very much looking forward to seeing our stuff on show.

Geoff.

Do you think he meant to call himself ‘Hi-Octane’? I tried to find out what ‘Octain’ is, but couldn’t find it in my dictionary.

He could be insomniac agnostic dyslexic, and lies awake at night wondering if there’s a Dog. When it gets too much for him he comes here and gibbers instead.

Why do you call details of an exhibition that doesn’t open for a few weeks yet ‘history’ Hi-Octain?

Perhaps whatever he’s inhaling is a little too ‘Hi-Octain’? I think there are a few too many of these on the forums:
