Heap of fuselages in Stafford scrapyard

It’s just like the old days in Watson’s scrapyard in Common Road, Stafford – heaps of camouflaged fuselages. In this case they are Lynx fuselages ex-Air & Ground aviation at Hixon, and therefore thoroughly stripped out, but if anyone wants one before they are processed, they will probably be cheaper than A & G were asking.

Really ?? A friend recently weighed in two corroded Hunter wings which undoubtedly weigh more than a stripped Lynx hulk and got something like £220 ! Mixed aluminium aircraft scrap is not that valuable !

I spoke to Watsons today, and there is indeed a clause in their agreement with Air and Ground which prevents them selling on any of the stuff they get, except as crushed lumps of metal. They were doing just that with big bits of Hercules while I was there. As they expect to get a lot more metal from A & G they are not going to upset them. A & G are a business, they are trying to make a profit, and are not going to let Watson’s undercut them. It’s a shame, but there it is

If you want it then pay the price, obviously they were happy with what they got in scrap and less hassle than people bemoaning the prices.

Trolly Aux -I was under the impression that we already have paid the price ?? Surely as tax payers our taxes paid Westlands to build them ??

Therefore I don’t see why they couldn’t be offered to bone fide museums for practically nothing if they guarntee to keep and restore them.

They probably got the same price all 12 as they were asking for one if not less. Three went to a paint ball park 2 weeks ago from A & G before these came to Watsons.

All too predictable, people won’t pay the ludicrous prices being asked for surplus these days so it ends up in the bin rather than lose face and sell for less. hopefully if there is another auction bids will reflect what has happened here, I hope the scrapper knows now to hang on a bit longer next time

There was a line up of Lynx fuselages (army and navy) at Middle Wallop for a while. Are these the same ones?

The Lynx in the photograph looks very much like XX907 which was used by the RAE and ended up stored for a long time down at Westlands.

Sadly these have all been shredded total of 12 he said they were worth little in metal and did not know there was any interest in them as we could have done a deal they arrived un damaged and where wrecked by the machine smashing them up.

The Lynx in that photo certainly is not a recent demobbed AH.7….!

And looking at the scrapyard website seems to point they have chomped some Hercules fuselages as well

I imagine these are some of the Army Lynx fuselages sold at the A&G auction earlier this year……the Navy airframes were auctioned too.Be interesting to know if the quantity at Watsons matches those sold….and if the serials handwritten on the noses still exist….and how much they are asking now……the hulks went for around £3000 each at the auction as I recall.

May have been sold with clause not to sell on ,happened a lot with stuff from STafford when run by contractors. Also the army lynx are ex mod and not air and ground. A and g only owned the navy ones.
