An Ansett 767 flying the Melbourne/Perth route as AN1169, callsign “Romeo Mike Delta” rotates fromRW16 at Melbourne.
In doing so, it collides with a fox on the runway, who is moving too slow to get out of the heavy jets way.
The Captain, a Canadian with a big sense of humour, politely informs Melbourne departures they may have a carcass on the runway.Later on, on freqency 125.7, Melbourne control confirms with Romeo Mike Delta that he did in fact collide with and kill a fox during the strike. It brought this response from the the Canadian skipper: “Ok…save the tail will ya, i’ll pick it up on the return flight for my car aerial!”
