Heathrow

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-08-02 AT 08:40 PM (GMT)]A study has shown that Heathrow was the worst airport for air delays last month {July}, with over 1/4 of flights being delayed for 15 minutes or more. This study also showed that Britain last month tallyed highest on the chart for longest delays in Europe.

BAA, and other airline companies say its because of the new ATC center at Swanwick, and the increase in air traffic.

The top 5 for last month: Heathrow
Gatwick
Stanstead
Manchester
Alicante.

Nice catches. What’s that on the nose of the Delta B767-400?

Nice stuff Neil. Heathrow has great light in winter on the rare occasion the sun appears.

Some lovely photos there. Nice to see some from Heathrow as I fly there every day for work. Pick of the bunch is definitely the TAM 76′.

I’ll update my images to show the location on the map. For 747s, A340s & A380s (and other low, slow departers), there’s a grass verge just east of the Southern Perimeter Road Esso filling station (TW6 3PF) that overlooks T5.
For lighter and more agile aircraft such as the 767, 777 & A330 – you want to be slightly further back from the runway so as to get a better perspective, so I suggest the Oaks Road bridge next to The Rising Sun pub (TW19 7LB). 😉

The two are within easy walking distance of each other.

I was on pretty much arrivals all day :), i did try departures but i was too far away. Just looked at your flickr and you were shooting heavies at 170mm? where the hell were you? where i was i struggled with 300mm. You’ll have to show me 😉

It is always best to use the fastest shutter speed as long as you use some f-stop setting above the widest. The widest aperture will use the edges of the lens and this is the least sharp part. It is better to use a small amount of closed aperture to force the light through the cente of the lens (the part that will have least defects and thus be sharper).

Back in the day I used SLRs for aviation photography. A zoom lens would averagely use an aperture range from f5.8 to f22 and f8 was good enough for air shots. Use a smaller aperture for parked aeroplanes to get a deeper depth of field (focus). Don’t know what the dSLR apertures are but you get the idea. 🙂

FWIW: 500 of a second was better for an all around action shutter speed as 250th often showed slight camera shake. But this may not be so crucial if your camera has shot-steadying software option.

Nice set of pictures Neil.

To answer Matt’s question. It looks like all the pictures are made with 1/250th of a second. It therefore looks like the camera is set to timepreference 1/250th. The f stop is then adjusted by the camera to the setting needed for a correct exposure.
1/250 is indeed not always a guarantee for a shakefree picture, especially when a longer lens (or more zoom) is used.

Some cracking shots Neil, well done! 🙂 I love the framing in the first few, and you are right – the 777 does look great in BA colours. An AA 777 is also a welcome sight to me any day of the week 😉

When I clicked on the images for a bigger picture, I noticed there’s quite a lot of camera shake? I don’t know what others would suggest? But perhaps a higher shutter speed?

Matt

EDIT: Actually, I think the culprit may be the F-Stop? It seems a little high to me.
