Heathrow behind the times

Hi All.

This will probably generate alot of criticism, but here goes.

I think Many will agree with me that we should be ashamed of Heathrow the way it is today, OK it has terminal 5 being built, but it desperately needs additional runway capacity. The central area is very congested, there are huge delays when checking in, huge delays while waiting for your luggage, and huge amounts of baggage goes missing.

I feel that with runways 27L and 27R being the main runways for departure (due to prevailing winds), any flight leaving terminal 5 will be delayed by the amount of time it will take to taxi down to 27L or 27L, thats not including any delay the aircraft will encounter while it awaits its turn to take off.
British Airways will no doubt have more departure delays once they move to terminal 5, although when flights arrive on 28L or 28R at least they will be simply able to pull off the runway and T5 is just in front of them.

We all love Heathrow for spotting and the wide variety of aircraft and airlines using it, but Heathrow has not kept up with the growth in traffic, expansion plans should have been put in place during the 70s, we have to blame successive governments for the state of Heathrow today, at the rate of growth in air travel and the amount of passenegers expected to increase, Heathrow will only get worse.

I’ve only few from LHR once and that was with hand luggage only. So really looking forward to Novembers trip via LHR with Virgin! Essentials will be in my hand luggage!

Cannot see traffic switching elsewhere in the near future.

Biggin Hill will not become an international airport for quite some time as the local residents have had an injunction against the airport to prevent any further expansion and also preventing commerical airlines from operating services to/from there…

I am sure I read somewhere that the airport management are actively trying to get the injunction overturned, which would be great for me as I only live 20 minutes away!:D

In my opinion, LHR needs a new owner who does not have a monopoly and is therefore willing to spend cash.

….Any recent plans to upgrade Biggin Hill aerodrome to a third major
airport for London?

I think the good people at Stansted were under the impression that they were already working at London’s third major airport.

….It looks fairly rural there.

All the more reason to keep it that way, then.

re Heathrow

Sorry folks.

Misprint. I mean Heathrow runways 27 left and 27 right, not 28L AND 28R
