Heathrow Concorde Model To Disappear!

I have just heard on local news that the British Airways Concorde model, registered G-CONC, will be dismantled on Sunday 1st April. Apparently, the cost of the land it sits on is too high! The model has been in place for 16 years.

As far as I know there are no plans to move G-BOAB from where it is now.

Whats happening with G-BOAB? Its currently parked at Heathrow. Are they going to put it on a podium at T5 like theyve done at CDG?

Local councils are fighting over putting the model on a roundabout to point toward the Brooklands Museum!

The news Id heard had the model Concorde going to Brooklands & as has been noted before it being replaced with an A380. Bex

Yes, I also heard from a fellow forum member that it would be moved to Brooklands.

Apologies for the foreground clutter, but I have attached a shot of the model taken on 18th March, just as boards were erected around it.

I am not going to make many friends by saying this, but I actually agree with BA on this move, as much as it pains me to say it… I recently read somewhere that it has cost BA 16 million pounds just to keep the model on the roundabout, and their decision to take the model down was because they could not continually justifying spending such a large amount of money on a model.:D

I just don’t understand how BAA works out it’s parking charges for models ??? 😀

According to FlightGlobal, BA have declined to continue paying for the site and the new customer for it, to use it as advertising space, is Emirates. Again according to FlightGlobal, the most likely option is for Emirates to stick a large model of an Emirates A380 in the same place as Concorde is/was!!! 😮 😡

Andy

I am happy that its gone to a muserm and I also happy its being replace by another model a Emitates A380 brilliant 😀 Take it they be using there A380 on there LHR route:diablo:

As great and as iconic as Concorde is/was, I too would not be able to justify spending 16million on ‘a model’. And also to know that it is going to be replaced with an Emirates A380 actually sounds exciting as it is a more modern aircraft, and I think would make just as good impact to welcome visitors to LHR as Concorde has done!

I am glad though that a sensible decision has been made to give it to the Brooklands Museum rather than it being taken down and destroyed altogether!:D

Well the Concorde model is going to be replaced by an Emirates A380 model….

least it is keeping with tradition!

One European airline project which ended in financial disaster will be replaced by another European airline project which is heading (at the moment) for financial disaster!!!

Before any of you start, The concorde project didnt make a profit or even break even, thanks to the 1970’s oil crisis and a mass of cancelled orders

The A380 with all the delays and financial penalties, Airbus at the moment needs to sell alot more than originally intended A380’s to break even.

This post was not a dig at the beauty and elegance of concorde nor an excuse to start an Airbus Vs Boeing thingymajig!!!

Hopefully the sight of the boards around the model will be enough to convince any sceptics amongst you. This is no April Fools prank.

Sounds like an April Fool. Mind you… a roundabout… now that could be used as a helipad. Crickey, maybe it’s not an April Fool…

Cousin. :diablo:

I was at LHR yesterday and was upset to see that boards were being put up around it, I expect by now it’s not visable at all! 😡

The model should go to central London somewhere. Perhaps Red Ken would be interested. Then again, perhaps not.

Bri;)
