Heathrow Visitors center.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-08-02 AT 04:12 PM (GMT)]Hi, just got back from a rather dismal day at Heathrow, left my house at 2:50pm and arrived at heathrow at 3:30pm, and found absoulutely no where to park the car, drove mostly all around the airport but nothing.

Did manage to see a few a/c, including the cathay pacific 747, B-HOX.{picture below}

Whilst driving back around the perimeter road of the airport, I saw a sign for the visitors center, went round to it but it was shut.

What I really wanna know is, has anyone been into the visitors center at heathrow, and if so what is in it?

Thanx for your help.

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

If I wanna cheap day out at an airport I go to LHR by tube(I work for LT), as Andrew has already mentioned Wimbledon to Earls Court and then piccadily line to LHR , then either spot from Hatton Cross(best when planes landing 27L, not so high)or continue thru’ to T’s 1,2, and 3 for spectators or jump on a bus(free) round to visitors centre(best when planes landing 27R)where the tea and snacks are much cheaper than that overpriced dive on the specs gallery, I very rarely take my car as I resent being ripped off by NCP, Srooge is not my middle name.

Well Dan I either suggest save up your pennies and park in the small car park next to Hatton cross station, or park in tone of the airport terminal car parks, or park your car in a back road/street just outside the airport grounds, and walk to hatton cross and catch the tube.

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

The parking bit you’ve marked on the map, is that runway 09L? I think I’ve been there once. Problem is that I quite like the Queens building for views or photos so I need somwhere to park the car (cheaply) and then have easy access to transport to the center of LHR. LHR is the best airport for aircraft, but its too damn expensive, MAN costs nothing but petrol with fantastic views!

Train? Coming from Leicester it would probably cost a fortune, need to change to underground and therefore take quite a while too! Plus you lose the flexibilty of a car.

The only road I konw your not allowed to park in evea in the airport grounds is on the Perimeter road.

Its not a motorway, thats the blue road on the map, the M4!

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

A travel card costs you £12??? Wow thats expensive. Is that for one day? when I get a travel card, it costs me £5, I buy mine after 9:30 — off peak.

£12 seems an awful lot?

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

It shouldn’t cost too much. If you’re not near to London, simply get a London TravelCard on the train from your nearest station. From Winnersh, which is where I am (1h 00min by train from Waterloo) it costs about £12 off peak. I hold a railcard so it’s only £8 but this allows you to use the London buses and undergrounds as much as you like that day – it’s certainly worth a try!

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-08-02 AT 09:41 PM (GMT)]Dan, Yes but it will probably cost a bomb. A better place for parking is at the end of the runway {opposite end to hatton cross} look for a sign whilst your on the perimeter road, marked up with the name longford on it, go down that road, Moor Road {A3044}, and your on the end of the runway, closer than being at hatton cross!!! Police will not move you off, because there is nothing saying that you can’t park there AND NO YELLA LINES EITHER. Its up on the pavement parking. As you go along the road, you will probably see many cars on the pavement. I usually go on a Sunday. If you go to hatton cross on a Sunday you still have to pay to get into the car park… but I again usually go on a sunday and park on the double yella outside the car park on the perimerter road, but your likely to be shifted by the police.

The only good time to park up the other end though is when the a/c are landing otherwise the best and easiest place to see the a/c is up on the spectators roofing area.

If you go into Hatton Cross and down into the tube, get on the train and get off of it when you reach station “terminals 1,2 and 3. Then follow the signs to terminal 2 and your almost there.

I usually get on the train at Wimbledon tube station {district Line} and change at Earls Court.

Hatton Cross is on the Picadilly Line.

Hope this helps in some way, and I hope you can understand it all alright??? lol

There is a few small maps below, where you can see this road and you can see the runway. The red road is the A3044, this is the road you can park in, on the pavement.

DIRECTIONS:

Hatton cross station has a big red circle round it, see the perimerter road, go towars the western end of it.

On the next map you will see that I have circled a round about, go to the 3rd exit on this round about {A3044}.

On the final map, you will see the A3044 road,Go up this road, and you should see cars up on the pavement as you near the end of the road, this is where you can park up.

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

If you stand outside Hatton Cross, you can see and hear aircraft landing or taking off – v. close!

You can go for a quick wonder and end up outside the chain fence separating the pavement from a bit of apron. I walked about 25 feet away from no less than 6 757’s about a year ago.

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

On the subject of parking around Heathrow. I thought I read somewhere (on the net) that a good place to park was Hatton Cross Tube station, and then catch the tube to LHR.

Does anyone know where this is?

It used to be great – free parking AND free entry. As far as I know, admission is still free but parking is now £1 an hour.

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

It’s more or less a museum about the history (and future) of Heathrow Airport. The scale model of the new terminal 5 is good and another model uses switches and lights to show where everything around the airport is kept.

I’ve been several times and the view around the airport is great.

RE: Heathrow Visitors center.

Heathrow visitors centre provides a great view of the airport… and aircraft operation out of one of the runways… can’t remember if it’s north or south! There’s a model of the airport in there… some models of aircraft… some info about what BAA does for the community… like soundproofing grants etc. There’s a mock up of a cockpit… I think… 777 (?). That’s all I can remember from my trip 1.5 years ago!! Oh, there’s a conference room in there too!! And a cafe!!
