I am one of those fussy guys, who looks the labels at products, don´t eat fat, genetically modified food, not meat, only fish and vegs……a pain. Now as I am getting older, my diet is not as strick as it was: my issue……are the people eating more and more junk food in you country?. Snacks, fats, savouries, sweets are being diet for the children, people are fatter day by day and disease related to food are common nowdays. Are we spoiling our children future?. As far as Spain is concerned, and other mediterranean countries which are “proud” of Mediterranean diet of lowest levels of cardiovacular diseases due to (vegs, fish, olive oil, wine and fruit) we are getting too much influence of exported junk fast food and industrial sweets. What about in your countries?.

But still school lunches should be providing healthy food rather than snack and fast food. What example is that?

saab – school provide optioanl lunches
IIRC at primary school 50%+ has packed lunches
at secondary school most people utilised the snack bar facilites and brought what they wanted
in deprived area thoses who’s parent are on income suport get free school meal but only 900,000 (ish) people are on that
so not that many your affecting

I dont think the food is getting worse in this country, there’s plenty of good fresh healthy food around, it’s the advertising thats to blame , telling us to buy this and that , and how many of us are taken in?
I used to love junk food , especially pizzas, but now I’ve had to change my diet quite drastically as I now have arthiritis, which means little or no dairy products, no red meat, no spicy food etc, yep ,all the things we all like, but when ones healths at stake one has to take care.

I don’t think it is just by parents at home Keltic. In the UK school lunches provide, for many, their only main hot meal of the day, however, this meal could consist of pizzas, chips etc. These foods are hardly beneficial and do not meet the daily portions of vital nutrients needed to stay healthy. How this will affect children in the future remains to be seen, but they are all at risk from heart disease and cancer not to mention dental problems. If a school, therefore, cannot educate children on the importance of eating healthily then who can?
While I understand that a lot of blame may lie with the parents not providing children with the correct food and education at an earlier age, a lot of it is a result of many living in poverty. What is more appealing and cost effective- an expensive portion of vegetables or an easy and cheap convenience food?
The media also has a lot to answer for, while we are a democratic society allowed to make our own choices, the media encourages parents and children to take the unhealthy option through irresponsible marketing. How can children ever have a notion of junk food as a bad source of nutrition when you have on prime time children’s television manipulative advertisements selling them a bad diet through pop stars and footballers? It gives it a positive image, which is wrong.
While I myself do eat some junk food, I know when to stop and take the healthy option. It would seem that in the western world people do not know or do not have any option.

I’ve tried the “Durban” curry in the shops here, its ok. That Nandos is good with chicken, I used to order xtra hot once, although I’ve calmed down a bit now. Best Peri Peri I’ve had was in Mozambique.

fish and chips are not a problem as long as they are fried in vegetable oil not fat or butter. Organic food….God, they are too expensive. Pasta is fantastic, specially prepared with “fruits du mare” or other fish, and fresh vegatables with italians seasonings. My sin…….sweets¡¡¡¡

Everyone is free to intoxicate with junk food, because we are clever enough to guess their consecuences in our organism. What I am concerned about is the way kids are educated at home everytime they see dad with a big bowl of crisps instead of a proper meal, or when mum prepares them sticky fries instead of vegs. Younger generations are being spoilt. I am also concerned about the amount of fat, the sweets have and how they eat them.

Its hard to stay away from it all because it is all so good! however always buy organic food its much healthier and the more people that buy it the bigger it gets thenthe cheaper it gets so do your bit to support the future and buy organic food. Also a note about the fast food chains, McDonalds is loosing business and i think people are realizing how bad it is for you!

You can buy “Durban” curry sauces in the shops – makes like Nandos, which I personally like.
Tried a lime peri peri sauce last night with my chicken – wonderful!

The great thing about the UK is all the curry shops. Really hot curry is great!! Like spiritual, man.
The place where I come from, ie Durban, South Africa, has a large Indian population and there’s lots of south Indian food around, but it very different to the curry in the UK.

We have no major fast food outlets in Guernsey, which is quite a bonus. Fish n’ chip shops ok, but generally nothing major. To be honest people are quite influenced by the major resources on the island so fish will be bought fresh, meat fresh and fruit and vegetables fresh and also the supermarkets stock local products so it is good. There is quite an emphasis on organic food over here but it is quite expensive and is really only catering for a minority market.
Yeah ok, there are pizzas, Indian and Chinese restaurants here but on the whole it is nothing bad, there is no major problem. People still buy healthily and eat quite sensibly as fresh is still the major preference amoungst locals.

In India fast food is growing but still home made fresh food is most peoples prefrence, and it is very healthy too.
