Heinkel 111 Enquiry….Cornwall 1941

Hello,

Been out tonight on a meal with friends celebrating my Birthday (yesterday) and one of them has asked me a question, that I haven’t a clue about answering. The gentleman has lived in St. Agnes near Perranporth all his life and was asking about a Heinkel 111 that crashed in the sea off St. Agnes on the 3rd May 1941. All he has managed to find is that it was numbered 4021 and coded V4+JL. Unit may be 3/KG40? Hope I noted this correctly, as had a few Doom Bars!

Can anyone shed any light on the matter, or point my friend in the direction of someone or an organisation that may be able to assist him further?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Best wishes,

Martin

Many thanks to everyone for taking time to reply and to supply me with the necessary information. Will pass the details on today.

So sorry that it has taken a little while to reply (I’m not normally like this), but these last few weeks have been a little hectic in the Pengelly household, with my elderly Father in hospital as we speak – so much to organise for when he comes home – and then myself have been in this week, having a shoulder operation. Just managing to type with two hands, but making full use of the backspace key.

Again, thanks, much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Martin

Sorry. Found the book but it is about the war in Oxfordshire not Cornwall as I thought.

Keep an eye on the Luftwaffe Crash Archive. So far volume 6 is up to 31 December 1940. The next one or two should cover the date you are looking for. It is very comprehensive including crashes off shore.

Somewhere I have a book about the war in Cornwall called When The Lights Went Out. If I can find it in the pile I will check it out.
