Heinkel 111 wing crosses.

I came across a picture of a He111 shot down over England guarded by two soldiers.
The aircraft had been hastily painted for night ops.
More interestingly on the upper surfaces of it’s wings where the standard large crosses and smaller crosses at the wing tips.
Was this standard practice for some squadrons? Why was it done?
The smaller crosses don’t seem to add any more visual impact than the large crosses?
Thanks.

It was seen in a period of transit between the two sizes – didn’t last very long but presumably some aircraft retained them for a while. I think that the large crosses were just too visible and compromised the camouflage.
