Southend is a long way from the sea,
Is that why it is called Southend on Sea?

Cheers Trumper…hope she makes her way back into the restoration shop, especially now the Ju52 is back on view (ie they moved her from a closed hangar).

Where is the CASA now? Some time back she was moved from H1 to the restoration shop (which made me think that – at last – she was going to get some TLC) then IIRC when I was at Legends she had popped up somewhere else…!

:)She was in the hangar near the OFMC and the submarine and lifeboat.I think that was a couple of weeks ago so she may have moved.

German Army CH-53s actually. Both times the pilot was Klaus Althoff.

as when it came into Dx slung underneath an HC-53 ‘Jolly Green Giant’,
and into sight came two HC-53’s of which one had a red Hawker Sea Fury slung underneath (D-CACY?), having flown all the way from Germany.

Southend is a long way from the sea, but fairly close to the Thames Estuary and I can assure anyone who wonders, that the salt air permeates a vast area in that region.
How do I know?
I was born and bred there, for my sins, and everything I ever owned during the time that could, would go rusty very quickly!:(
I remember seeing the CASA-2 there during a return visit in 73 and later saw what was left of it at Nth Weald in 88, when Aces High were the owners.
I offered them my services as a mechanic for free at weekends, but they didn’t seem interested.
That same day, I watched them running up the B-25 camera ship and shot a couple of snaps of it.
My damn camera counter packed up, I ran out of film and only managed to get one external shot of the CASA cockpit.
The best part was burning my 76, 350 Vette round the perimeter.:diablo:

From memory I think this one had sat outside on display at Tablada (I think that is the right spelling) ever since the Spanish AF retired them so it may have taken part in the filming in Spain but it wasn’t one of the two brought to the UK (G-AWHA and WHB). I think the ex UK pair are both in the USA now. G-AWHB was at the Southend Museum for a long time. By coincidence I happened to meet Ray Thomas when he was working in the ex Southend aircraft at North Weald before it went to the USA. He said the spars were in a pretty poor state on that one and put it down to the salt in the air at Southend even though the museum was a good way from the sea.

Did this CASA take part in the BofB film?
If so was it one of the one’s used in the Spanish filming or one of the one’s that came to Duxford?

I’m not sure about the former, but definitely not for the latter.

I don’t think that Graham Warner’s Blenheims were in any better shape than the CASA at Duxford when the restoration started, but then Warner’s team had more than one airframe to chose from and about a dozen engines. It was Warner who said “When there’s a will, then there’s a way!”. The same applies to the CASA.

The arrival of one of those underslung loads caused some concern when the downwash made Eddie Coventry’s (I think) CAP 10 to dance around the grass! The German Jolly Greens were a familiar sight at the time, thanks to the Hanna link!

Bit of a shame really.. as when it came into Dx slung underneath an HC-53 ‘Jolly Green Giant’, its then owners OFMC declared its intention to return it to airworthy condition. I just wonder that if Mark Hanna had not been killed it may have progressed someway towards that goal.. we shall never know.!
Incidentally i remember the day when i sat parked in Grange Road which overlooks the entire airfield, and into sight came two HC-53’s of which one had a red Hawker Sea Fury slung underneath (D-CACY?), having flown all the way from Germany. Its sights like that that make you sit up in disbelief, and curse the fact that i did’nt have a camera handy.. i never learn.!

not much option for anything else – the main spars are rapidly turning into powder!

I thank you:)
