I want to find some good helicptor flight sims. The only ones Im familiar with are Comanche and Hokum. In the late summer of 2001 there were some flight sim threads discussing these but the archives only go back to the summer of this year. Could anyone please recomend me some good chopper combat sims. thanks

RE: helicopter flight sims
“The best around is Comanche V Homkum, sort of Apache V Havoc 2. “
It is the sequal to apache havoc.
If you have both games installed you can fly all four helos in all six scenarios. (each game comes with two helos (ie titles) and three scenarios each…)
I bought a game pack called E.N.G.A.G.E. and on the box it said it had Commanche Hokum in it.
Even the disk in it has a commanche and a hokum on it and on the back of the packet it has screenshots of the commanche hokum game.
When I loaded it I found it was Apache Havoc, which I already had… (though it was the e version update).
I’ll be ordering it from Keymags soon… 🙂

RE: helicopter flight sims
The best around is Comanche V Homkum, sort of Apache V Havoc 2. The graphics are pretty good even by today’s standards. But in my opinion the dynamic campaigns of both games make them superb, there are far too many sims that neglect the dynamic campaign, instead gearing towards linear missions. Check Key’s shop they’re selling both for around a tenner I think. I had lost my copy of Comanche Hokum so I bought it about a month ago from them.
If you don’t mind a more arcade feel then Comanche 4 is a good bet. Based loosly on the DeltaForce Landwarrior engine, its the first Novalogic game to be fully 3D and not involve Voxels! The game is graphically amazing (if you have a killer Graphics card that is) There are various campaigns set around the globe, including jungle, urban, desert and snow environments. The campaigns are linear and the missions vary from sneaky sneaky to all out fast paced devestation.
Plus its great mulitplayer, makes a good change from Quake/Unreal imagine 32 attack helicopters going deathmatch, great fun!

RE: helicopter flight sims
Hi Mixtec,
I have a few heli sims, though one of the ones I have reccommended I still don’t have… 🙁
I have Team Alligator, because it is now budget, Gunship by Microprose, Apache Havoc, and Commanche 4.
First of all I rate Commanche 4 the lowest simply because it won’t run on my machine. (I have a Voodoo 2 card and its drivers have not been updated to DirectX8.1)
This rating might change when I get around to buying a new graphics card.
Team Alligator was cheap but only simulates the Hokum and was not as user friendly as the remaining two games so I rate this as third.
Gunship is rather nice and has a lot of features that I like… ie sitting in the gunners position you can use key commands to direct the pilot… ie fly in the direction I am currently looking, hover, 1/3rd speed forward, 1/2 speed forward continue to next waypoint etc etc
It has a limited size map that is rather small, though the graphics are good and vehicles can drive through forrests, which consist of trees rather than a block surrounded by trees.
Also only the Havoc is available onthe Soviet side, though the choices for the other sides is wider.
Also different types of unguided rockets are available which adds flexibility in choosing your weapon loads.
Top in my opinion goes to Apache havoc because of the quality of the objects and the size of the maps (hours in real time to cross).
Also the wide range of ground, air, and sea targets including missions from carriers at sea.
Cockpit detail, plus interesting campaigns as well as the ability to swap between seats, and use the various sensors. (ie FLIR, LLLTV, HMS, Radar etc)
With Commanche Hokum you can fly 4 helicopters in 6 scenarios with the full range of weather and time effects.
All of the above should now be available on budget too so why not get a few. 🙂
