I just joined this forum and I thought that by writing this topic I might be able to get to know some of you.
I live around Tiverton in Devon and I am very keen on Aviation Photography and History.
Oh and does anyone know of a picture of a Handly Page Hampden that I can use as an avatar?

Indeed – Duncan was very good at what he did, and the power of his pgotos – especially through having the same subjects is immense.
The shot of the loyalist soldier is a superb image – real or fake I neither know nor care. It portrays the death of a soldier, and portryas it superbly. His Omaha beach stuff has a quality all of its own – yet how would they have looked normally? His photos in requiem, and in some of the other books i’ve seen on him, I never felt were of a standard to make me go ‘wow’. Standard fare in special circumstances.

Yeah, I’ve got Duncans book. Nice bit of ‘Amateur Photographer’ w*nk details in the back to make it more saleable to the anoraks too! I know an ex-Navy photographer from the Korean war (US).Never found Capa to be anything amazing personally. I think Capa made his name on subject and content rather than what he made of it – same with page to a degree, that and his reputation that fitted so well with the 60’s era.
The Duncan book cost me £3.99. How many other Korean war photographers do you know of?
I examined Capa because of his work in civil war Spain. Whether you think it is a fake or a lucky break, his Death of a Loyalist Soldier is truly iconic. The shots that survived Larry Burrows unusual processing technique on D-Day have a life that you could say was missing from other (excellent) shots by other (excellent) photographers.
Fascinating subject, though.

I wonder if you can get Frankies House on DVD ????
I bought Page after Page after seeing the series, though if I remember right Tim Page actually slated the series. On the whole I enjoyed the book and read it in a matter of days.
Did they find out what happened to Sean Flynn ????
We toyed with the idea of going to Vietnam in March, it’s still quite pricey though I think it would have worked out at £6,000 for two weeks. May be next year !!!!

The things some people will do to get away from the forum for a few days!
Thanks Snapper – but I always have a dread of seeing things from yesteryear that I thought were great only to find that they are actually, on reflection, a great steaming pile of cow dung.
My morbid interest goes further than the Vietnam war though. Have you got David Douglas Duncans This Is War? Pictures from the dark, early days of the Korean War when defeat and retreat were the orders of the day? Got a complete Robert Capa collection somewhere too.
Wish there was something from the group collectively known as ‘The Bang-Bang Club’, just for the difference…

Ok. Head straight down until you hit the sea. Get on a boat and go across (straight) until you hit the land. Then, turn left and you can’t miss it.

Navigation hint 1:
Buy a road atlas.
Where are you going to in France? I’ll give you directions.
You can keep Requiem – I bought it because it was too stupid not to.
By: ageorge - 20th January 2004 at 14:23
Thanks Snapper !! , that is damn good of you , I can drop it back in when Daz and I are coming back over from France ( I’ll be looking for some navigation hints just shortly !!! )

Alastair – I have a copy of Requiem you can have. I paid £40 for mine when it came out, then spotted this down the road a couple of months ago for £6. Pick it up when you’re down here (it’s way too heavy to post).
And try www.abebooks.com – there’s loads of his books on there.
Flood – I have a VHS of Frankies House (off the TV) in the loft if you are short of it. Also, Another Vietnam is like a counterpart to Requiem.
I have Larry Burrows Vietnam too – that is a must-have, as are some of Don McCullins. I have most of his. Those two are a world apart – real masters.

The first is photos by the photographers killed during the war, second is photos by the NVA/VC team’s photographers.
And once there was a documentary, ‘Danger on the edge of town” – Tim Page trying to find out what happened to Sean Flynn and Dana Stone. Superb it was – but somebody kept the tape. Also, Frankie’s House – based on Page after Page. I have that on VHS in the loft.
Got most of those – Requiem is the book to tell the story of those news and combat photographers who only returned in a body bag – or worse…
Annoyed that Frankies House was never repeated. Annoyed that Danger On The Edge Of Town seems never to have been repeated.
Always on the lookout for books on news action (not sport) photography – the World Press Photo Award/Yearbooks are always good for showing the stupidity of recent conflicts and the suffering that it causes.

His biography is amazing , the Documentary is superb , he revisits Vietnam with some ex VC officers to try and see the conflict through Communist eyes . His head is slightly addled through injury and too much pot smoking but a damn good programme just the same . I’ve only ever read Page After Page , any other names I should be looking for ???
